Gamers are not flattered because no one but Elon ever wanted to be an accomplished PoE player on top of a world-class business career, and Elon did it in such a cringe way that if anything, he tanked their status along with his.
If they are so much better than him, they should be able to slaughter him despite his PtP account though, right?
Maybe the gamers feel low status because all their grinding doesn't amount to a hill of beans in the end.

I mean it's certainly possible to release your training code as well as the resulting weights for an LLM -- now I'm curious as to whether this company is actually doing that or not?
If not, agreed that "OS" is a big misnomer here -- there are certainly lots of individuals floating around who might like to train their own version of this and could afford to do so (FIRE startup retirees spring to mind) and "you can use our weights" is quite different from "you can try to make improvements on our process". More like free beer than free speech.

"it's not about ideology, the bad (incorrect) term is polluting our data" seems pretty good -- we are talking about a medical database here, peoples' sex is actually a thing that matters; gender not so much.
(to the extent that it's a thing that actually exists, which I agree that the thrust here is that it's a 1:1 match with sex, and therefore would be redundant to track separately)

Canadian Scots were much less border-inflected in general, so I think the selection effect would be pretty different. Handgun availability is probably more like Massachusetts than Scotland, but nothing like the Southern states.
Scotland itself can be... pretty violent? Knife fights are I think statistically more deadly than handgun wounds...

It's just the no-fun brigade up to their usual tricks -- Peterson has been railing about this kind of mundane intervention to suck the enjoyment out of life for regular folks as incipient tyranny for some time, and I'm inclined to agree. See also health-justified alcohol taxes (now spreading to countries where people can't really afford them and could really use a drink, eg Mexico) and 20 mph speed limits in the UK.

This is a bit regional -- pickups are more common for rural tradesman than urban -- partly maybe for high/low trust society reasons as you touch on, but also decreased feasibility of having materials delivered to the jobsite leading to an actual need to, uh, pick things up yourself.

A few years from now the COL in Toronto will have increased a commensurate amount, and you will be saying the same kind of thing.
If you want kids, you have two options:
- Vote different, and convince a lot of other people in Toronto to do the same -- at all levels
- Get the fuck out of Toronto -- Calgary is nice this time of year

Do some Kaggle (or maybe Topcoder if they still have good DS comps?) and call yourself a data scientist, start sending out resumes -- you've already got a PhD (from a Western university?) and published papers, so you are honestly probably a better hire than at least half of the candidate pool that I've seen.
Lack of direct experience might have you applying to moderately lowend DS jobs -- but that would be in the $100-130K USD range rather than $40/hr and scammy (again assuming you are in the US) and WFH is still common.
If your medium sized town is south of the Mason-Dixon line and you don't mind occasional travel I might even be interested -- I need to hire somebody in the next couple of months. Feel free to send a PM.

All of the effectiveness stats are 'effectiveness in use' -- so 'using' condoms includes 'yeah I use condoms but sometimes run out or whatever', just as 'using' the pill includes people who forget to take it, 'using' NFP includes 'but baby I need you now', and 'using' withdrawal includes... um, accidents.

So far we've been beating CoL inflation, so the trend lines look good (even modelling the inevitable slowdown in wage growth with age).
You may be beating CoL inflation in some basket-of-goods sense; you may even have more than doubled your salary (starting from a pretty low number) in the last ten years -- but you still can't afford a house, and the average home price in Toronto has been quite consistent in doubling every ten years since well before you were born. How much more than twice your current salary will you be making ten years from now, that you will be able to afford the house that you can't afford now?
The best and highest paying jobs are in Toronto.

You don't have a home to sell -- you can't afford one and your rent money is disappearing instead of being (partially) stashed away as equity. This is unlikely to change for you in the future.

Soy-jacking aside, I love the vibe of big cities, and the absurd fun and convenience they provide.
"I like having fun, I can always have kids later" is... not a really unique attitude, but not a long walk from "I don't really want kids that bad".
Finally, all my friends and family are in Southern Ontario. Most of my friends live a 15 minute walk/5 minute bike from my apartment. If we moved 3000km to have a kid, we'd be completely isolated from everyone we know (which isn't a permanent issue, as you make new friends, but damn...)
And now you want to inflict this pain on your own (hypothetical) kid -- you need to break the cycle somewhere man.

Homemade wine tends to be superior to the stuff you get in the store? That is... not true at all in my experience. And in the cases where it is, a tonne of work goes into it. Anything plausibly resembling "I left some fruit in a cabinet" is likely to be barely drinkable by desperate college students (I should know), nevermind better than what you get in a store.

Somebody on the Scott-post did cite a paper doing exactly that -- in fact they take it a step further and look exclusively at mortality among people involved with the hospital system (where testing was manditory) but without a positive covid test. (matched cohort, 2018 vs 2020)
