This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

Our graft is these days mostly limited to 15-20% cost inflation on government contracts. Your president is a an actor whose show was funded by an oligarch, who among other things,stole how many billion $ from Ukrainians by running a bank and giving out loans to friendly companies.. Was it 2 or 5 billion ? They still haven't bothered to wipe that shit off the internet. We had shit like this in mid to late 1990s. That was .. quite some time ago.
If these days Ukraine was as corrupt as Slovakia, you'd probably be as prosperous as Poland what with the better climate, natural resources and sea access.
Now, Slovakia isn't a normal country, but at least half of the parties wouldn't tolerate something like this, and it definitely wouldn't fly anywhere in western Europe.

It's there for anyone to see — like the fact that Slovakia is one of the most corrupt states in Europe — worse than Georgia or Rwanda. Nothing wrong with it — you made a great progress since mid 90s, being in EU and all that.
But that's interesting — right? The only people who like to talk about Ukrainian corruption or Hunter Biden so much are Orbanites from Hungary, russophiles from Bulgaria, Slovakia in your case, MAGA people (who are linked to Paul Manafort — one of the most corrupt people in recent Ukrainian and American history), Trump himself — all exemplars of honesty and incorruptibility. I find it hilarious. Clean your own stables.

Matter of perspective. I see people who want to keep Europe subordinate to the murderous, greedy idiots in D.C. as a 'fifth column'. Roughly 40% of Slovaks agree with me.
Knowing your kind, people like you rarely ever vote, and know culture war figures from the US better than their local representatives. "Local corruption? Nah, what about transsexuals in Virginia?"

Culture war figures from US have far more influence even in Slovakia than whatever local family that is currently serving the people.
World is small and gets smaller every day, all new American fads (gender affirming surgery? foot binding? neck elongation? skull trepanation? self mummification?) arrive in few years even to remote rural Slovakia.
It is good to watch what is coming to be prepared in advance.
Let's not pretend that for Eastern European aficionados of American Culture War it is something more than a hobby and an outrage porn. Slovakian politics, I would presume, is just boring in comparison to American.
I don't believe it's true, but that's what they like to tell to justify them participating in Culture War. The general advise "to touch grass" still applies.
All politics is outrage porn. Unless you start early and jump to the professional track (join College Republicans/DSA, volunteer to knock on doors and canvass voters, learn the ropes, make connections, claw your way upwards etc etc...), it is nothing than spectator sport.
How exciting is politics of ordinary 5 million American city or state?

How would you go about resolving this disagreement? I've seen BLM / trans-women-are-women / etc talk in "backwards" European countries. Is it the "rural" part you're disagreeing with?
