This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

I think it's the same with Black women. Black men like "yellow bones", White men like really dark ones (I thought the term was "blue bones", but every search engine suddenly disagrees). Asian men like Asian women with disturbingly pale neotenous faces and round eyes, White men prefer them sallower and with more... tsurime eyes.
It’s shocking when I realized that westerners do like women we consider hideous, with high cheek bones and those eyes. I thought that’s some sort of humiliation ritual until I found out that they’re somewhat consistent on pornhub.
Yes, high cheekbones are attractive in the west. So is a physically larger woman than the Chinese prefer.
But are you sure that Asian porn doesn’t attract a crowd that likes yellow skin and slantey eyes?
Maybe they do, maybe they don’t. Can’t tell either way, and you should know better than I do. Or not. I certainly don’t interact with enough Americans to say anything.
You have weird conceptions of China, being one of the only people who refer to us as chinaman on this website (a bit old fashioned, and if you don’t mean ill I don’t really mind). Maybe it’s due to the lack of interaction, which I understand.
I don’t think our people are physically smaller than yours, and judging by how latinized Americans are and will be, its surely favoring us.
America is still 60% white, and above 70% heritage American(blacks aren't that much smaller on average, except negritos which we don't have). Latin mestizos are short but rather... stout, there's a reason they do most of the heavy labor in America, and they make up most of the rest.
What's wrong with the term Chinaman? I know we don't say 'Mexicoman' or whatever, but we have lots of 'China buffet' and no 'Mexico restaurant', so it's at least consistent. I've never claimed to be fashionable. I kind of assume men looking for Asian porn specifically want women who look more... stereotypically Asiatic. It's probably a fetish. Otherwise why would they look for Asian porn? White women are more attractive(and Chinese beauty standards certainly seem to gesture in that direction).
No, America is already minority white, and the "official figures" that claim otherwise are deliberate lies.
I’m wondering what you’re basing this off, because most informed speculation is that ‘white’ as a social category underestimates thé percentage of phenotypically European cultural Americans.
My understanding is that there's a case both ways?
On the one hand, 'white' in US census terms includes groups that are generally not considered white socially, in the US - most notably Middle Easterners are counted as white, and most Americans would not consider an Egyptian Muslim to be white. According to the census categories, an Afghan is white, and I think the popular use of race is different to that.
On the other hand, US racial categories tend to undercount whites otherwise. A person with one white parent and one black parent is counted as black. A person with three white grandparents and one black grandparent is counted as black. It's not literally a one-drop rule, but as a rule of thumb, if there is a mixture of any kind, it defaults to the non-white race.
This is also likely to be exaggerated by changing patterns of racial identification. To put it more simply, fifty years ago, if you could identify as white, you did, because that was more socially prestigious. Today, if you can identify as non-white, you probably identify as non-white, because now that's the most prestigious option. It isn't everywhere, but certainly in elite contexts, if you are otherwise-white-passing but have just enough of a distant family connection to claim to be black or Asian-American or Native American or ambiguously brown some other way, you probably do.
The census has changed as well - this relates to the above, but just by itself, the addition of multi-racial or mixed-race categories (now apparently 10.2% of the population) is going to depress other categories. It is thus possible for the racial categories on the census to change significantly even with the exact same population.
What is the 'real' white proportion of the US population? I don't know. It doesn't really have an objective answer, because the borders of the category 'white' are often shifting, and different people put those lines in different places. If you pressed me I'd guess that, broadly speaking, white people, are somewhere around 60-70% of the US population, and any answer more precise than that is going to require both stipulating a narrower definition of white (and good luck finding one with majority support) and collecting data that nobody has actually collected.
Note that in 2024 Middle Easterners and North Africans were officially separated out from whites. This change will be implemented in the 2027 American Community Survey and the 2030 census.
