My father was was appointed mayor of Nampa, Idaho. Nampa is in the Boise Metro, it's Idaho third largest city at around 110,000 people. R+20. He's only gonna be in office for a year an a half, doesn't plan on running after.

What would be the most impactfully policies he could pursue.

Of course he probably won't listen to me, and the city council certainly won't listen. Parks and Rec is more real than people think...

He can increase public awareness on a variety of important topics: that increasing school funding doesn’t work; that hiring post-bachelors teachers is actually harmful, let alone unnecessary, for increasing performance in schools; that you can download free books on libgen and free scientific articles on sci-hub; that IQ should be a permissible factor in hiring; that corporations should consider bypassing the university system and just hire promising high school students; stuff like that. Just break through the Overton Window like the kool-aid man. Do it on live television.

I like it, but ambitious. While we’re at it, might as well add sharing IQ, FBI crime, and racial in-group preference statistics to the list.

You’ve really got a boner for chaos don’t you? “But that would be too inconvenient for our ideology.”

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
