This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

They were never married but in any event the two women live together and raise their children, the guy doesn't live with them but the relationship is amicable. He pays substantial child support and makes weekend visits to their household from time to time. He has learned his lesson and is engaged to a woman who is very conservative.
Apparently "learned his lesson" means "found a THIRD wife" lol. This guy is straight up an african patriarch. His are the genes that will persist through the current demographic collapse.
Are there any particular lessons to learn from the way he grooms himself, acts, treats women, etc.? Or is it all rules 1 and 2? I figure if I can reach a third his power level I'll be batting at-par.
Well the new girl is from a traditional background and is NOT open to the idea of of being intimate with another woman.
I would say he's not particularly physically attractive but to borrow a phrase from the incel community, he has been money-and-status maxxing over the years.
But also, his path was largely happenstance. He had one serious partner who ended up turning the relationship into something polyamorous and then cheated on him, resulting in him leaving and finding someone else.
If the goal is to maximize one's genetic legacy, I think the power move is to join an ultra-religious group like the Amish, Quiverfulls, or Haredim.
I think that's the general way poly goes; forget the types who have entire communities about it, rules, jargon, treat "The Ethical Slut" as the Bible, and make it their entire identity. The general person who goes "Honey, I want to open up our relationship/marriage" is only looking for an excuse to make cheating acceptable, be it the man or the woman who suggests it, and very soon afterwards they will break any 'rules' laid down or dump you for their new honey. Better to say "No" and get out first.

The semi-recent news story about the african patriarch with a hundred+ wives mentioned that several of his wives eventually chose to live outside of his property and sustain themselves. But it remains the case that they are still raising his children and unlikely to bear any other man's children. Your friend's exes are wives enough for any sociological purpose. That he has to support them while they no longer have sex with him isn't unimaginable for many married heterosexual couples.
I think that if the goal is to spread your genes far and wide, there are better ways to go about doing it. For example, I know a man who was a relief worker who was sent to a small village in Asia. One of the local girls seduced him (correctly realizing that the resulting child would be an excellent meal ticket) and now this man makes a monthly payment which is modest for him but has set up this woman and her family in style.
Probably a determined man from the West could father 50 or more children in this way.
