Culture War Roundup for the week of June 29, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

That’s even worse. Sorry we imported a bunch of third world people who commit violence at higher rates. Besides having to live with that, we will arrest you when they attack you because it’s much easier to arrest you who won’t resist too much whereas they might heavily resist.

How is this not waging the culture war? Possibly I have misunderstood the ethos of this weekly thread.

I agree this is waging the culture war.

You recently said something along the lines of “I like the west except its people”

Yes, that's true. There's much I like about the west. For example the institutions are great in theory but the people around them lead to them rotting and withering from inside.

Singapore for instance basically copied British Insitutitons on Independence and has done really really well over the last 70 years while the UK has just declined. The institutions are the same in both places, the only difference is the people, and that's where the divergence in fortunes comes from.

I was just stating a fact, not trying to wage culture war.

What is it you don't like about western people?

To wit, this is another video by the same channel that recorded the arrest OP is talking about; pick a random start point and watch this for a collage of how these sorts of people behave: https://youtube.com/watch?v=XOWLnLNWKAw

And now realize that I, a well adjusted, highly productive member of society gets taxed close to 50% to subsidize these people so they can continue to behave in the way they do right now. Any reasonable person would develop a dislike.

This is just about the lower classes, but other justifiable reasons also exist for those above these people on the social stratum.

.. how these sorts of people behave: [video of lower/underclass people in the UK, both native and non-native]

As you point out yourself later in the comment, this is cherry-picking the dregs of society. Actually Singapore is majority Chinese, so I'm guessing (as per standard HBD thinking) their dregs would behave better. But then, the original context of your comment was about the demographic replacement of Western White Americans by Latinos, whose dregs I assume behave even worse (as per standard HBD thinking - also those cartel atrocity videos like Funky Town come to mind)

...but other justifiable reasons also exist for those above these people on the social stratum.

Could you expand on this? I'm guessing you are thinking of Western "degeneracy" here (feminism, gay marriage, gender-affirming care, soft-on-crime policies, etc), but I won't put words in your mouth.

And now realize that I, a well adjusted, highly productive member of society gets taxed close to 50% to subsidize these people so they can continue to behave in the way they do right now. Any reasonable person would develop a dislike.

Right, but stepping back a little, all of this (your job, your home, etc) doesn't exist without the UK - which was (mostly) built by White people, and who play an essential role in maintaining it the present day.

If we look at the rest of the world, empirically it seems that non-(White/East Asian) races, on a group level, are unable to build or even maintain high civilisation (Singapore didn't just "copy British Insitutitons on Independence", it is also ~75% Han Chinese!) - importantly, even if you are a talented individual, you still need to go to a 1st world country to get a well-paid job (as I understand it, this is why you are here in the UK)

And there's also a bunch of "personality" things that are nice: politeness, honesty, quietness, individualism, etc.

So I argue that you should like the Western peoples, because as a group they allow you to realise your talents and enjoy a much higher quality of life than you would have had if they had never existed in the first place.

I guess I'm basically just asking the cliched "if you hate it so much here, why don't you just go back to where you came from?", but in good faith as a non-rhetorical question (I remember you've been asked this before, and replied something along the lines that you need to be here for salary reasons, whilst disliking the native people, and I'm challenging the idea that these 2 things are unrelated to each other)

India does build high civilization. It utterly fails to make its dregs benefit from it- they worship toilets instead of using them- but they're quite capable of building it.
