Found on 4chan: Claims that Reverend Insanity doesn't get good until the 200-chapter or even the 400-chapter mark. @self_made_human in shambles?

How long is a typical chapter?

Looking at three random chapters from the pile of raw single-chapter HTML files on my hard drive, I'm seeing word counts between 1500 and 2000.

You're telling me this book doesn't get good until 350,000 words in? That's as long as Anna Karenina!

I'm just relaying what the 4channers said, without necessarily endorsing it. (Looking at my ancient bookmark file for browsing through the aforementioned individual HTML files, it seems that I personally dropped the story at chapter 428.)

Just hit 400. It has been fun throughout, but slightly better in the first 200.

I was already in shambles, thanks for asking. But no, I earnestly disagree. I think it only takes about 50-100 chapters, at the most, to decide if the story is really for you. I can't insist that anyone persist beyond 200 if they're not already sold. I continue to die on a hill named Golgotha Peak Fiction.

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
