So, I'm a bit late to the thread here, but I've been playing around with Gemini off-and-on the past few weeks.

Now, I keep encountering "AI boosters" extolling the universal utility of LLMs, that there's nobody who can't benefit from using an LLM as a tool in some portion of their job or daily life. Well, I've been looking for those uses, and I'm not seeing it.

So, my question: what is my personal use-case for an LLM? I'm a NEET, I don't code, I don't do any of the things I see people regularly using LLMs for.

"Here is everything I've ever written down, public and private. Tell me what patterns exist that I might have overlooked"

"I always wanted an app that would do X. Please build one and install it on my phone."

"I'm reading this book (pdf attached). Do a deep analysis of chapters 1-3, as if for a book club, and let's discuss"

"(attached photo of a product's ingredients) explain what all these ingredients do individually, and how they come together to form a complete product"

"Geoguessr this photo and explain your answer"

"create a custom tpot (twitter) character creator, complete with all the obscure classifications, kiki/bouba, apollo/dionysus, theatre kid/band kid, Kegan stages, the works"

"calculate the optimal talent build for this game given these specifics about its combat system. explain and show your work"

"help me unpack why I irrationally hate this popular thing"

"give me the tl;dr of this 2 hour youtube transcript so I can decide if it's worth my time"

"educate me on the background context I need to understand this current world event"

This is similar to how I use AI. I think an underrated use case is asking it to build browser extensions that can make small modifications to existing websites. It's the kind of thing that wouldn't be worth the effort without AI.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
