I rewatched Minority Report the other night. There's a popular theory that once Anderton gets arrested and imprisoned, everything the audience sees thereafter is his dream, and he's still in prison at the end. What do you think?

I'd say that they screenwriters were going for a movie that can be interpreted either way, as the would be more in the spirit of PKD.

Spielberg was probably more focussed on making sure that it worked well as a straightforward popcorn movie than keeping it ambiguous. But he probably tried to a little without compromising enjoyment.

I'm not really a fan of the idea that there's a singular interpretation. Collective creative projects usually end up as a bit of an interesting mess where things are unclear.

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
