Wellness Wednesday for September 2, 2026

The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:

  • Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.

  • Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.

  • Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.

  • Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

Tangentially related, but once on my EMT-B rotations at 21, I had a Chinese guy assume that I was a fucking resident, because I was a man wearing scrubs on the L&D floor, who was clearly too young to be an attending. I was not a mature looking 21 year old. I didn't stop getting carded until like 30. A few weeks earlier on an ER rotation an elderly black lady had asked how young they were starting us these days, because she couldn't believe I was working in a hospital when I looked like a high school freshman.

Anyway, the nurses had a great laugh about that and I believe the poor intern? was given shit about it for several weeks.

Also I was wearing big stompy boots with my borrowed scrubs, and he apparently just didn't notice those.

I resist the siren call of scrubs. Comfy? Yes. Practical? Yes to the yes, given the exposure to bodily fluids. But that only makes wearing white dress shirts to work even more of a standout.

I heard a senior female consultant commiserating with the junior girls about how she still gets mistaken for a nurse all the time. I told them that I get mistaken for a doctor most days of the week, and I've stopped correcting people.

Then again, I haven't been carded since I was sixteen.
