Biology as a subject has never been my forte. In high school, I mistakenly took the advice of the majority of people in the grade above mine and opted for biology over physics. Though physics may be more mentally demanding, I appreciate its formulaic nature. Due to my executive dysfunction, I never managed to get biological concepts to fully click in my mind, as much of the learning process felt like rote memorization of Latin-derived jargon I saw no way of applying into my everyday life. I wish to retake my biology exam in November as a private candidate and find a way to get the content to resonate with me. Any actionable advice or resources one could point me to?

LLMs are excellent for recommending textbooks or other study material.

Also, if you do have reliable reference material in hand, you can ask the LLM about topics within it and have something to double-check to make sure the clanker isn't just hallucinating. It can be more effective than reading the references straight through, depending on your learning style and how the material is written.

Which concepts tend to get you confused? Cell biology, the complicated biochem stuff, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, Punnet squares?

I honestly believe I have knowledge gaps in just about every one of them bar ecosystems and Punnett squares. Gene expression, neurons, enzymes, blood transport, respiratory and gas exchange come to mind.

How are you with the sciences generally?

My prowess in natural sciences is for all intents and purposes nonexistent, I have always been more humanities-oriented.

And how are you at understanding technobabble on shows like Star Trek or Stargate?

I don't watch those particular shows but usually that isn't challenging, it's answering open-ended questions and having to delineate specific processes in choronological order that eludes me.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
