This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Where possible there is a push to create laws about speech that causes offense as a means of sidestepping the truth as a defense. They wish to make speaking 'offensive' truth a crime.
I’m reminded of the Cathy Newman Jordan Peterson interview where she asks why should his right to speech be more important than her right not to be offended.
And to me that is the core conflict between Europe and the New World captured in a single exchange.
Jordan Peterson is Canadian and Cathy Newman is a resident of the planet Idiot - it's too pat to boil it down to New and Old Worlds.
Especially since free speech is defended by law in both England and apparently Brussels, as it says in the article. The defendant wins most of their cases if they actually get to court.
The issue is informal sanctions and discrimination producing a chilling effect, something which is at least as prevalent in the US as it is in the 'Old World'.
Very much agreed. If you are dependent on PAYE/W-2 employment to put food on the table, you de facto have more free speech in the UK than the US, at least if the online accounts of the Great Awokening from non-leftist Americans are accurate.
Are you saying that in the UK it's possible to work for a leftist industry (like say film or publishing), say "black people have lower average IQ" and keep your job?
It's illegal to fire PAYE employees for out-of-work political speech in the UK (and almost everywhere apart from the US), the law is enforced, and the norm it implements is generally accepted to the extent that cancel mobs don't even try to get e.g. baristas fired over social media posts. Despite the campaign against him, Cofnas was able to keep his job at Cambridge until his contract expired - and I think we can agree that academia is a leftist industry.
This wouldn't help you in film, because temp and contract work is ubiquitous in that industry and I agree that a known racist who was not already a megastar would not be able to get gigs in the UK - as in the US.
The Maya Forastater case held that views on sexual morality are protected by anti-discrimination laws by analogy with religion, so "Gays will burn in hell" or "Transwomen are actually men" enjoy an even higher level of protection. (Forastater herself sued over the non-renewal of a temporary contract). She was working in a centre-left thinktank, which is another obvious example of a leftist industry.
But the difference that is visceral if you hang out with PMC people on both sides of the pond is the impact of hostile environment law on normie white-collar workplaces. The idea that an employer is expected to be seen to be preventing a very broad range of potentially offensive speech doesn't exist in UK workplaces which are general corporate and not explicitly leftist. In the UK, it is possible to work for a centrist industry like accountancy and poast "black people have lower average IQ" (though incidentally that probably isn't true in the UK) and keep your job. Motteposters who do this in the US have said that they are relying on not getting caught and putting an appropriate level of effort into opsec.
Interesting. So you are protected from being fired for speech that could land you in jail? I'll admit that the UK is sometimes puzzling to me.
You are correct that if you posted "black people have lower average IQ" you could be fired from your white collar corporate job in the US and no one would bat an eye.
I do not think "black people have lower IQ on average than white people" would land anyone in jail in the UK. In the unlikely event that the police took an interest, the normal life cycle of an "arrested for poasting offensive meme" case is that the police ask the poaster to make arrangements for them to be arrested, booked, and promptly bailed at a mutually convenient time, after which the end result is either charges dropped or a three-digit fine. The cases with multi-month jail sentences for social media posts involved posts which incited specific crimes at specific times and places.
In general, in countries with unfair dismissal protection in the workplace you can't be dismissed for committing a crime unless either the crime or the punishment (jail time, driving ban etc.) is relevant to your ability to do your job.
