Culture War Roundup for the week of September 28, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

While certainly the TFR is nothing to brag about, the U.S. white fertility rate has held steady while other races have fallen steeply. Black fertility has fallen definitively below white fertility, and Hispanic will soon. As usual, Asians are reticent breeders. (Note: this is based on race of the mother. Asian male fertility is apocalyptic).

I saw something like this on Twitter but couldn't find it. Sol 6.1 was able to recreate from the Wonder Database on light effort. Incredible. So, take with grain of salt but it matches what I remember from twitter.

Race / Hispanic 2024 2025 2026 H1
Hispanic, any race 1.93 1.86 1.68
Non-Hispanic White 1.53 1.55 1.56
Black 1.50 1.44 1.39
Asian 1.26 — 1.14

Combine this with a large drop in the foreign born population and the US is likely now growing whiter for the first time in probably at least 100 years. The absolute number matters a lot less than the relative number. The cake can get smaller, but you can't replace sugar with salt.

Elsewhere of note, the Hispanic world is now entering the accelerated phase of the demographic transition. Here's some fertility rates that might surprise you. I wonder what's going on?

Country TFR Year
Chile 0.99 2025
Colombia 1.00 2025
Costa Rica 1.12 2024
Uruguay 1.20 (projected) 2025–2026

I wonder what's going on?

I think it's pretty simple.

My hypothesis: TFR and current economic projections on the value of a future human are linked.

When TFR is 2.0, it means today's projection of the total projected economic productivity over the average future citizen's life is zero.

A TFR under that means it's negative (population is in surplus), a TFR over that means it's positive (population is in shortage).

Market distortions can affect this, especially when the sum of people born in positive-value conditions attains more political power than the sum of those who were born into eras of zero or negative value, because they will always inherently believe those conditions exist (which is generally how you get Great Replacement-ism).

As for why the collapse in future human value is more pronounced outside the modern West? Well, countries that were extremely late to the industrialization party- South Korea being the standout example at a TFR of 0.7- never enjoyed the kind of automation-induced economic boom in the '50s-'70s. Remember, that was back when AI mechanization wasn't yet good enough to do all the work itself; operators were not only required, but paid handsomely.

Once you hit the '80s and '90s, automation gets so good that the demand for unskilled operators ends completely in favor of its new manifestation, robotics- but in countries that were just industrializing at that time, that demand never materialized in the first place (they mostly skipped straight to the advanced implementation). They never really had a legacy economy full of rich former operators to mine, either (which is also part of why Europe is also not as affected as they should be) so there's no other residual economic value to be captured.

What the total value of a future human being is depends also on culture; again, South Korea (and India) being two standout examples of that given how they treat their kids. Education at that intensity is entirely worthless, yet it must be conducted precisely because it's a ritual sacrifice of child [and an increasing portion of young adult] life that legitimizes the society's choice to gradually wind the overpopulation down non-violently (for the alternative is 'you get a good 20 years of early life, then you go to war and die'). [This is the future of all societies where enough humans exist that automation/State capacity can be leveraged to consume the totality of a human's life as a sacrifice for "not being killed in war as the ultimate price of economic uselessness"- Ingsoc being the best fictional example.]

Otherwise, you end up like Europe in the early 20th century where you set up the Fields of Ritual Suicide in scenic northern France and order every man you can get your hands on straight into the machine guns. Or, once automation (and being outcompeted for 10 years due to neighboring countries that could afford to embrace it) does wreck your society as well as reparations imposed for killing more of your own men, you proceed to declare yourself the Master Race and as such decide to depopulate the nations to your East to punt on your current/eventual overpopulation.

And now there's even more advanced automation: though the short-term effects remain to be seen as increasing or decreasing the value of a human being, the long-term effects are clear that it will decrease. This is a problem that's here to stay (and not engaging with it leads to destruction as soon as a neighboring country decides it has a population problem that you or your land could conveniently solve; Butlerian Jihad might be topical, but is ultimately an isolated demand for rigor if you think about it for more than 5 seconds).

Im going to push back on Asian education being a sacrifice, I’d say it’s more like tryouts. You have limited slots of good-enough jobs for a huge population, so you need to sort the population so that if there are maybe a million really good jobs, 5 million decent jobs, another 10 million good-enough jobs, and a population of 50 million, the population has to be sorted, and the education system is probably the best place to do th3 sorting. Given that the results will be life long, people push educational systems to their logical limit.

You have limited slots of good-enough jobs for a huge population

We've already established these places are overpopulated relative to the available economic opportunity.

Absurdly wasteful education schemes are a religious rite. The youth have the 'youth' part of themselves sacrificed in exchange for a promise legitimizing the killing of anyone who flips the table.

I’d say it’s more like tryouts

Indeed.

The US pulling off much of the top talent in Central and South America and then simply not having its fertility completely collapse like the rest of the developed world would be a very interesting and impressive case of having its cake and eating it too.

Combine this with a large drop in the foreign born population and the US is likely now growing whiter for the first time in probably at least 100 years.

Not really. There is no "huge drop" in the foreign born population, just a drop in illegal immigration. Very few of the Bidenwave and before have left/been deported. Likewise, a tiny positive differential in white American fertility now doesn't change the fact that white Americans as a whole are disproportionately post-fertility (aka. Boomers and Gen X) and is almost certainly undone by legal immigration alone.

You are correct about boomers dying. I was wrong. The U.S. is not getting more white.

But do not dismiss the drop in foreign born population. IIRC, it has declined by roughly 3 million, accelerating over time. It's the largest drop ever by far. Yes, it's not enough to fully undo the Biden wave. But it will happen and then some as long as Republicans have the house, senate, and Presidency. Trump #2 is the only administration in history to deport people in large numbers or to fully secure the border. Say what you will, he has exceeded all expectations on this front.

Do you have any more information on the non-hispanic white TFR increase? Is the TFR increase driven by recent white immigrants to the US, like Afrikaners whites for example? European white immigrants? Hasidic Jews? Amish? Or is this a resurgence of white TFR driven by a return to traditional gender roles by white zoomers?

No, it's just raw numbers with no additional detail. I wouldn't be surprised if Hasids and Amish are starting to move the needle a little bit. Not Afrikaners though.

A small correction, it's not a resurgence. White TFR is still far below what it was even 10 years ago. It just seems like the bleeding has stopped for now, while black and Hispanic fertility has collapsed.
