Culture War Roundup for the week of October 12, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Then why didn't they support the SAVE Act if it was such an own goal? This one doesn't pass the smell test.

I think both Republicans and Democrats have a weak sense that there's a lot of cheating that goes on in the big blue cities and that clamping down would probably help Republicans.

Just because something hurts the other side's supporters more doesn't mean that it doesn't hurt your own supporters, and just because Republicans have lost all pretense that they aren't hacks willing to do anything for partisan advantage doesn't mean Democrats are willing to do the same.

and just because Republicans have lost all pretense that they aren't hacks willing to do anything for partisan advantage doesn't mean Democrats are willing to do the same.

Are you willing to actually defend the view that the Democrats aren't hacks willing to do anything for partisan advantage? It seems pretty trivial to argue that they are.

The Democrats have repeatedly demonstrated that they are not willing to risk being called racist by their own supporters in order to secure a partisan advantage. This is sufficient to explain their opposition to the SAVE Act or other dumb Republican voter-suppression proposals.

That doesn't sound like an answer to the question I asked. As to what you said, I'm skeptical of the direction of causality you're pointing to. I don't think there's an objective standard of "racism" that the Democrats fear transgressing, it seems more that anything that goes against the Dems will be called "racist".

To answer the question, most elected Democrats are hacks who are willing to do anything for personal advancement. Elected Democrats believe, rightly or wrongly (I genuinely don't know which) that being called racist will do more damage to their personal career prospects than hurting the party.

To respond to your empirical argument about what gets people called racist, the Great Awokening was all about Democrats and other left elites calling each other racist over intra-coalition political disagreements and personal beefs. And what we saw was that elected Democrats were willing to beclown themselves and the Democratic Party rather than risk being called racist. In addition, enough people have (for reasons which may have been good back in the noughties when they started doing it) pre-committed to calling voter suppression racist that there is no DPUSA Grand Ayatollah who could turn the racism accusations off for partisan advantage. Finally, there are large parts of the Democratic base who are sufficiently rabidly partisan that they will punish elected Democrats (including by calling them racist if the opportunity arises) for voting for any GOP-proposed bill even if they would normally support it.

most politicians are hacks who are willing to do anything for personal advancement.

FTFY

I have met a lot of amateur politicians who genuinely believed in what they were doing. In my youth, I was one. We tended not to get elected. But your basic point is correct.

Among the people doing ward-level politics in the UK in the noughties, I would guess:

  • 15% professionals and aspirant professionals to whom your comment applies
  • 40% true believers
  • 15% people mainly interested in getting laid (I have been to six weddings, including my own, of couples who met through youth and student politics)
  • 30% people still doing it because their whole social life revolves around politics and they are too autistic to go out and meet some normies

Maybe at the low levels, fair enough. But I have a hard time imagining that the true believers manage to reach the very top-level of politics.
