The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:
-
Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.
-
Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.
-
Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.
-
Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

Congrats, that's impressive. I'm surprised your conclusion is that CICO is garbage. Keto/paleo diet naturally removes a lot high calorie processed garbage that causes people to consume more calories than needed. You ate whole foods that were high-volume and low-calorie, which put you in caloric deficit, causing you to lose weight. It's pretty much impossible to overeat with whole foods because of how voluminous they are unless you're treating yourself to huge pieces of steak every single day and eating other stuff on top. Especially in your case, even without exercise, being 360lbs at the start meant that your maintenance calories reqs were sky high because you were exerting enormous amounts of energy simply existing at that weight. You could pretty much afford to eat anything and everything on the keto/paleo diet list without counting a single calorie. Just as an example - 1kg of strawberries is 300 calories/~70grams of carbs and a standard bag of HARIBO gummies (350g) is also 300calories/80 grams of carbs, and not a single person eats this many strawberries in one sitting, while vacuuming a bag of those gummies is pretty damn trivial. I assume you could coast on eating keto/paleo diet without counting calories until you're about 210-200lbs and then you'll plateau until you get Cronometer/MyFitnessPal app on your phone and buy a food scale and/or start exercising. Best of luck! I'm on the other side of the coin right now - trying to gain lean muscle and it's been difficult. I found losing weight much easier.
CICO is garbage advice and dieting measure, but standard and acceptable physics.
Our bodies don't measure fullness via calories, there are many ways it can adjust metabolic rate to match food intake, and it has many ways to encourage food intake if body is using more calories.
Count calories all you want (and most people don't want to spend tons of time doing that), but what you eat is gonna determine whether you feel fine and satiated or hungry and miserable. Being hungry and miserable all the time is a great way to quit a diet. So why not skip the part where you count calories, eat the right foods, and don't feel hungry and miserable all the time. That's what the non CICO diets tend to offer.
yeah CICO does not tell you how the variables are changing. It's tautological.
