This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

I really don't like making grand pronouncements (I think it's a bit narcissistic) but since I seem to have a reputation on The Motte I think it's only fair to take my licks:
Blah blah blah, words words words, excuses excuses, feel free to get your licks in now.
I just think Trump is too old now. He used to sort of break the rules of conventional politics, and get away with a lot because he was so good at answering opponents with funny retorts and social media. But he now he's just kind of old and grumpy and boring, so all of his controversial opinions come back to bite him and the rest of his party.
Trump in his current form reminds me of Biden 4 years ago. It's just darn hard to even understand what he's saying.
Biden and Trump represent the two distinct strategies for dealing with aging and not really totally understanding what's going on around you. Walk into any nursing home and you'll see the same things:
One group mumbles pleasant platitudes and general cliches, and just nods and pretends they know what's going on. They never really say anything specific, so if you aren't asking them direct questions you figure they're following along on the group's conversation and enjoying the company. You think "Oh isn't Grandma enjoying our visit so much!" And she is enjoying you being there, so she fakes it to keep you happy. Then something slips and you realize, oh grandma had no idea what was going on this whole time.
Another group of old people reacts to not really being able to hear or understand the conversation by loudly and angrily insisting on what they think the conversation is about. Get angry, get loud. Insist that you know what was going on, they're the ones who don't know what's going on! This is grandpa screaming at you that he knows the damn hot dog stand in 1963 was on 16th and Linden, not on 20th and Turner, he damn well knows it and you need to stop lying to him about it! You typically see this in older patriarchs, often those with money or other resources, because people will humor them to suck up to them for fear of being cut out of the will. Otherwise, they're so unpleasant to be around that people stop visiting any more than they need to.
Trump has been so charismatic and so powerful that the world really will bend itself around what are obviously dementia-addled statements like "Lake America" or reflecting pool vandalism. There are enough sycophants around him that any insane incorrect pronouncement he makes will be catered to by someone who wants something.
