Fellow Motteizans, what are your small scale conspiracy theories? I'm not talking grand narratives here. What minor, apolitical conspiracy theories do you explain to the next table at a diner.

For myself, I think at least some large portion of lottery drawings are not random. I base this belief on the fact that of repeat lottery winners, a suspicious number of them are math professors.

A lot of companies in ${CurrentYear} still have long laborious online job application processes that involve re-inputting things that are already in your resume/CV (and possibly a cover letter) because their HR are consciously or subconsciously selecting for employees high in conscientiousness, conformity, and obedience.

And of the right demographics: Please select your pronouns, your race/ethnicity, whether you identify as LGBT+. Such information is only for survey and reporting purposes, of course, and will totally definitely not affect your candidacy (pinky-swear).

Take this a step further. ATS systems track your keystroke accuracy to estimate your IQ. If I had to make an ATS software, I would put in all kinds of proxies in like this.

Or a step back, put in some hard-to-interpret nontechnical questions as further proxy IQ tests.

I can say definitively that’s false at the tech company I work for at least.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
