Culture War Roundup for the week of September 19, 2022

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Big post. I have to agree that Christianity had little to do with the rise of the West. I’m not persuaded by the esoterics and I see it from a different angle. Cultural practices that developed alongside Christianity, and may have taken a Christian flavor, were responsible for Western hegemony. These cultural practices involved:

  • Obeyed internalized hierarchies (in all facets, not a monarch or anything). There was agreement on the superiority of virtuous and great people, and secular as well as religious events glorified great people.

  • restrictions of women, restrictions on obtaining sex. Women are bad at choosing mates based on what is best for society, and sex is a reward for men.

  • Leisure emphasizing glory, awe, and longsuffering which orients a human toward longterm goods. This implicates the Church in its architecture and theology, but is not limited to any special ingredient of Christianity. Art often showed aspirational and inspiring scenes of glory. The Church emphasized the everlastingness of God. The architecture emphasized permanence. This orients a man’s entire mind toward the achievement of lifelong glory, whether they involves a risky trade expedition to the New World, spending years writing a novel, whatever. It is important here that achievement is forever praised, whether in titles or reputation, and superior over novelty and frivolity.

  • A deemphasis of novelty and frivolity. The Church criticized frivolous spending and displays of wealth, eg spending that is not oriented toward glory.

Something apparent when you read history is that Westerners focused on results and not appearances. They tolerated a large breadth of weird, autistic, and even antisocial faults provided that the person could achieve great results. Men did not have to focus unduly on fashion, mannerisms, and other vapidity to obtain a wife (there were subcultures were this happened, but it was not the norm). So you have someone like Napoleon who would sit on your lap and pull your ears, singing horribly and cheating at games, who would brag about how soft his hands were and had all kinds of bizarre habits. And these did not factor into his reputation whatsoever. Since the decline of the West, enormous energy is spent by men to not appear cringe (and this goes back all through 20th century), to look manicured and beautiful like a woman. All of that mental energy was spent more prosocially by the masses of men in Western history.

what is best for society is a question which there is a lot of variance in people's answers to. what sort of men do you think women should be rewarding instead?
