Seems like an entirely arbitrary place to draw the starting line.

The only meaningful measure of intelligence is one's ability to successfully make predictions about the world -- smart people can predict, geniuses can exploit. If you're right, you're right, and if you're wrong, you're wrong. It's a very straightforward thing.

Is there a name for this philosophy? I think it underpins a significant portion of rationalist thinking and leads to some of the more exotic conclusions.

So just to be clear, the gun was never actually used except to make you secure in the knowledge that you could use it?

There was no info that Kiwifarms considered off limits, was there? Any reasonable definition of dox most include 'the full set of personal information that can be had' right?

Tell me everything about hearing protection.

Requiring that people hold valid licenses for their entire training sets isn't even enforceable enough to do anything

Why do we think this is unenforceable? Unappetizing because it hits AI hard, sure, but surely not unenforceable.

Is there a serious value add for male sex toys? there's no anatomical analogy to a Hitachi, but a hand can curl around a dick just fine. No batteries, no plug, and I'm carrying it around anyway. The hell I need a toy for?

I mistakenly assumed that everyone around me regularly got flu shots and would be totally ok getting experiencing less than a second of pain to avoid harming my family. And I suppose now that the old folks are already dead from covid I shouldn't have anything to worry about-it's not like they're going to die again. But just like you, I feel like it's the principal of the thing. Choose Team Mankind or Team Virus (or, hell, Team China if you believe in lab leak theory.)

I think people should have the absolute authority to choose what goes in their arm, but if I see someone with 'death to /u/evinceo's ancestors' tattooed on their forehead, I'm going to treat them with some amount of contempt.

This seems preoccupied with aesthetics. Is cutting yourself in half with a sword more badass than a death doula? Probably. Is it the most pragmatic choice? I wouldn't say so. For one thing, samurai swords are expensive and if you use it, someone needs to wipe the blood off or it's going to mess up the steel.

I further disagree with your elevation of suicidal terrorists. They're rabid dogs who need to be put down, not someone to be celebrated. But the dichotomy between assisted suicide and homicidal last-ghasp sprees is a keen observation, so i'm going to talk about that instead.

Has the stigmatization of suicide pushed people towards murder followed by suicide by cop? One has to wonder if we could reduce the number of spree killers if we responded to their initial self destructive impulses with 'yeah, you can schedule a death, won't take long, and you get a free pizza.'

Maybe that's too extreme a swing. Maybe we just need to not treat suicide as the worst possible outcome for a mental health crisis, and instead treat murder as the worst outcome and suicide an acceptable alternative. If we oriented healthcare and pseudo healthcare that way, there might be a chance...

But then, suicide is probably far more common than murder-suicide, and we don't want to cause 10 suicides to prevent one murder, right?

I suppose not.

And I think Aesthetics might be more powerful than we realize. See, your swordsmen and your mad dogs and your teenagers all have one thing in common: they're imitating behavior, playing out a narrative they've got in their heads. Is there any way to get the djinni of a dangerous narrative back into the bottle? (Dangerous as in, you die at the end of the story!)

I just can't rationalize the idea of people being wiped out when their line will continue for generations to come. I don't understand what's being 'lost' if my kids were mixed race instead of white. They're still mine and isn't that what's important?

Right but any conservative president would have done the same. It's congress that made sure he got to nominate three instead of two.

For me it is hard to believe that people were so stupid for such a long time and wasted time and resources doing it just for fun.

You may be underestimating just how much people enjoy cruelty.

I'll chime in here that I'm one of the few libs to have stuck it out on TheMotte and, yeah, it does feel like it's taken a bit of an echoey turn with the site switch. I do think it's a mix of people finally being able to go mask off and rdrama folks trolling.

I don't think Joe Average Liberal will have the same experience I'm having, since I've spent most of my life enjoying back and forth with Cons and have my own weird ideosyncretic takes I like to ride around hobby-horse style.

I also don't have a great fix for this. Are there things libs want to say that they can't say on reddit? Abso-goddamn-lutely, but they're also things that left-wing spaces discourage saying as a taboo, so even unleashed in a place like this we hold our tongues.

Doxing: releasing personally identifiable information about an individual on the internet. An example would be someone's home address.

It leads to incorrect predictions if it makes predictions at all. It's usually used to explain rather than make useful predictions. It's model involves people smarter, more cooperative, and more disciplined than they really are. It promotes either inaction or ineffectual flailing.

The relative effort required is vastly different. Right now you need to compromise thousands of systems and individuals, in the app democracy scenario a single zero day could deliver you any policy you choose and nobody would be the wiser.

I agree that social media has enabled mind control on a scale we haven't seen before and it's incredibly dangerous, but I'm not sure it's a problem we can fix with censorship exactly. I don't know that censors can be nimble enough to stop the mind virus before it takes off. I'm pessimistic about it.

Within a community I ran, though, I'd definitely ban meme stock promotion.

I'm also not sure banning meme stocks is even a good idea. If someone lost their shirt on meme stocks, weren't they destined for financial ruin one way or another? Should we mandate that retail investors can only do index funds? Should we ban gambling and excessive charity donations, and should we ban liberal arts degrees?

Do we want to ban cults on general principle?

Suggesting that BLM is caused by affirmative action rather than by animosity between cops and black folks is a huge stretch.

60-90 minutes!? That's a crazy amount of time just to rub one out.

NATO doesn't protect anyone from invasion, quite the opposite actually.

NATO countries invaded by RF: 0

Non-NATO countries invaded by RF: 2

Gaddafi got what? His fair trial according to the rule-based liberal world order?

Something about the consent of the governed.

I don't think it's so much an indictment of Elon as it is of the position of 'free speech absolutism'

In your mind, what differentiates Edgerunners from a lower quality tragedy or film/novel with similar themes?

Withe reason Edge Runners works as a tragedy is because the characters dig their own graves without alienating themselves totally from the audience. That's hard to do. If you make your characters mistakes too obvious, the audience can't empathize anymore (lots of B slasher films fail this test.) If the consequences seem too arbitrary, the audience loses interest because it's just capricious fate.

Kiwi believes in being a heartless mercenary, but when the time comes to actually do it, she realizes it's not what she wanted after all, way too late. Tragedy. We don't really get much characterization of Dorio, but her attachment to Maine does her in.

Rebecca is mad for that scene, they kill the nutjob, great...then nobody ever mentions him again beyond Maine suggesting that David take his cybernetic hands? The loss of her brother seems utterly inconsequential to Rebecca

She spends the rest of the show being as reckless as possible until she finally pushes her luck too far. She also gets huge cybernetic hands, echoing her brother's style. She's loyal to David against all reason.

Or what changes could have been made to the plot that would make it better or worse?

One change that might have made it better? Make the mecha suit cooler? Remove 'Choom' from the script? Drop the school subplot, that felt kinda pointless? I can't think of any major flaws in the execution of the themes. They could have gotten away with not killing off Rebecca (go slightly lighter) or having Lucy remove her helmet on the moon (to go way darker.)

To make it worse is easy. David could have lived. They could have had the power of love conquer Cyberpsychosis. They could have failed to foreshadow everything so well. They could have added tons of gratuitous sexual peril. They could have shown the entire thing as some other kid watching a BD of David's life and ended it with a stupid comment. They could have done Lucy's arc without the moon thing.

You seem to be contrasting conspiratorial thinking with blind trust in authority. I don't think that's the only alternative. I think the default assumption is that any given individual or group is foolish and treading water and build your hypothesis up from there.

This is a wild supposition. What they're preventing is embryo selection for intelligence, or worse, people monkeying around with CRISPR. If it prevents HBD studies that's just icing.

The freedom to live any life, as long as it's the Taliban's life.

I think you've replaced 'freedom' with 'a good life.' It's probably possible to life a good life as a third world farmer, just as it's possible to live a bad life as a first world shitposter. But it's fair to note that if you want to go be Amish as a first worlder that option is available to you.
