bees suffer 7% as intensely as humans. The mean estimate was around 15% as intensely as people

Shocking. So shocking I'm calling BS. We should be arguing if one ten thousandth or one one hundred thousandth is a better order of magnitude estimate. Not 15%. Wrong order of magnitude is putting it lightly.

I'm aware of people very concerned about the very hypothetical suffering of tiny bugs including dust mites. Imagining that they have conscious awareness and suffer. Ex: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/3hqXxzFRSZqRFPCTv/killing-the-ants

We need a term for this. Toxic empathy or something.

Yes, this is selectively applied only to white people. I can walk by a huge "La Raza" mural and most people don't seem to mind. An equivalent "WHITE RACE" mural would never be tolerated.

Don't you have bigger problems? It's not like you should feel any "political" loyalty to them...

This is a general anti-empathy argument. Too general. If this was a principled consistent stance applied fairly to all political groups, then it would be merely ruthlessly cutting support for low performers in order to focus on broader goals. We can instead want to support some lower performing people and also pursue other goals. It is some bearable amount of opportunity cost that political groups accept.

I'm not concerned about imaginary white extinction or getting coal miners back to work, etc. But, I can feel some empathy for the victims wage suppression schemes. People who can't outcompete a Bangladeshi child or a Guatemalan in willingness to live in poverty or accept harsh working conditions. Even if they were hypercompetent, they can't and shouldn't want to win this race to the bottom against literal 3rd worlders.

If some white racist also extends some empathy to such people and feels some affinity to them, I don't think it makes sense to criticize that as not sufficiently important. The health and prosperity of their chosen group seems obviously important. Of all the criticisms to level at white nationalists, I'll give them a pass for wishing poor white people in the Midwest were healthier and had a higher labor participation rate.

They lack a central nervous system. If you care about suffering, then they don't count.

Except I once long ago asserted that on a different forum and got a bunch of angry vegans arguing that we don't know they can't suffer despite lacking a central nervous system.

One of my favorite articles. A white nationalist realizes he is actually the true rootless cosmopolitan. He also seems to really distrust and maybe dislike white women. Which is going to make having white babies very hard.

I hope he found happiness with a good Mexican or Asian woman, since he doesn't much seem to like white ones.

There is no reason to think single celled organisms can suffer.

why does the concept of white solidarity make you uncomfortable?

In common discourse, no one would say "white solidarity", they refer to this concept as "racism". I suppose most people would be uncomfortable with something they pattern match to open proud racism.

I'll bet the crime rates in my local major city are really quite low. Open drug selling and use is not prosecuted. Homeless shantytowns are allowed. Car break ins and retail theft are common but cops don't care. It's not even the cops' fault. Prosecutors won't prosecute so there would be no point in pursuing such criminals.

Indeed, if they decline to arrest and prosecute such criminals, then (convicted) crime rates must be low. My perception of property crime rates is rather higher since I see broken car glass on the sidewalk and many locked up items in stores. I bought a jacket and they were all locked together on cable locks. The employee explained that an organized theft gang rushed in and stole large numbers of coats, so now everything is cable locked. Grocery stores now have locked sections for not very expensive product. Who is stealing detergent? Anyways, I bet a review of local conviction rates would not reveal any of this.

You are listing 90s and 2000s culture war topics. It just needs some "preserving marriage" talk.

In 2025 no one is getting a struggle session for DND.

I don't know how to reconcile those insistences with the stark change in my daily life.

Lack of prosecution artificially reduce crime stats. "Crime rates are down, actually" -> our local progressive prosecutor has declined to do their job, so unprosecuted crimes are now much more common.

an onlyfans star writing about this on her substack might have motives other than sincerely seeking a solution to a problem

So that's now two onlyfans performers who determined that a substack is a good way to advertise to some potential clients. Aella and this one.

There was a question asked during the 2021 New York City mayoral race: what is the median sale price for a home in Brooklyn?

A few candidates gave answers of varying comical inaccuracy. One candidate was Shaun Donovan who has many years of housing policy experience.

As Wikipedia summarizes Donovan:

served as the 15th United States secretary of housing and urban development from 2009 to 2014, and Director of the US Office of Management and Budget from 2014 to 2017. Prior to that, he was the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development from 2004 to 2009

Many years of directly relevant experience including years working this at the highest level on this topic for New York City. His estimate for the median Brooklyn home sale price in 2021 was $100,000. Wrong order of magnitude. The cheapest listed unit on real estate websites for Brooklyn at that time was $100k for a parking spot. The very cheapest actual homes were many hundreds of thousands of dollars with the median sale price over $900k.

So yeah, somehow the head of multiple relevant agencies for years at the Federal and local level knows fuck all about the basics of his specialty.

I heard the audio from these interviews and interestingly Andrew Yang quickly reasoned that the median would not be significantly offset by the few super expensive homes in Brooklyn and guessed $900k which is within a few percent of the correct answer. Yang has of course never been appointed to be the head of any agency. Nerds may be right, but always be losing.

Ad hominem? You severely misread my comment and are angrily arguing against claims I never made and don't hold.

"devil worshipping" DND? I wasn't aware of a sentiment against it around here.

A "late term" abortion is "aborting" a fetus that would otherwise survive outside the womb. That's a premie baby and this is baby murder. Accepting that it is baby murder, there'd better be a damned good reason such as the kid was going to die anyways and also kill the mom. Something better than the dad committed suicide.

Agreed. A single instance of tit for tat is impressive. Almost all the way there.

Private schools in my area typically cost in the 30s to 40k per year.

"Kamala Harris is for they/them. Donald Trump is for you."

But also: there is an obvious problem with some bicyclists thinking that stop signs, red lights and all other forms of traffic control don't apply to them. I'm glad to hear their terrible behavior is not killing many pedestrians. Which makes sense since I would not expect getting hit with a bike to be commonly lethal. This is unrelated to concern about food delivery scooter people.

This morning I saw a bicyclist veer into the street even though there was a dedicated empty bike lane and an empty sidewalk. He was in one of those bicyclists suits. He was going really fast, but not as fast as cars approaching him from behind. No idea what was going throughout this guy's brain. One of the many bicyclists who seem to think their bike has an integrated forcefield generator. See that kind of baffling behavior with some regularity. I rode my bike to school from 3rd grade to college. I never did stuff like that.

an unregulated free market privileges large corporations over workers. I assume that most of the commentariat here is already familiar with this analysis.

Familiar sure. And also understanding it is false.

how do you explain to the autist the difference between black people and white people

I like Brazil's solution: a committee looks at you and then states your race. They don't accept one-drop "my grandmother was a quarter [something]" stories and don't need DNA tests. They look and state the obvious truth. If Elizabeth Warren stood before them, they'd yell "she's white" and be done with it. Because it is perfectly clear that she is white. "I share a common ancestor with some modern Guatemalans around 10 generations ago." Yes, yes. That's called being white.

Categories are fuzzy and sometimes you get a perfect wobbler: someone who is mixed race and self-identifies as some Brazilian racial category, but the committee disagrees. Categories being fuzzy doesn't mean they don't exist. This is an acceptable outcome.

I took years of public school Spanish class. In one class we left school and walked to a local taqueria.

Is he a boy and is fucking any significant part of the motivation for his actions? >He's a fuckboy.

Sure, but then fuckboys are everywhere. Given a broad enough understanding of "significant part of the motivation", most men are.

A young woman may go to college in a town other than the one she grew up in. And later graduate and get a job in some third town. No reason to think she has a local brother or father ready to punish you for not committing in the way she prefers.
