Why did Jared Kushner start following Andrew Torba and Chris Brunet on Twitter? Any theories?

Torba is an OG alt-right influencer, founded Gab and is openly anti-Semitic. He’s like a slightly more refined Nick Fuentes. Chris Brunet is a former conservative think tanker who is now talking about too much Jewish influence at conservative think tanks.

Jared is, of course, orthodox Jewish, and he also has a hand in picking Trump’s cabinet, so that he followed these accounts around the same time is bizarre.

Torba, unlike Fuentes(who is one of those online tradcaths whose religious identity seems defined by the church to which he does not go being in Latin- I am connected enough among IRL rad trads that any vaguely prominent person going to Latin mass is one about whom I can tell you if I care to take note, and I’ve literally never heard of nick going to mass), seems genuinely religious, as some kind of evangelical in his case, and his antisemitism is born out of religious rather than racial grounds. I get the sense that he would welcome an Ashkenazi or possibly even mizrahi(I’ve never claimed he wasn’t racist in general) convert at his church, albeit you don’t get a lot of Jews becoming baptists. He’s the founder of Gab, as you note, and AFAIK is genuinely committed to creating institutions that serve and protect white conservative Christians. His success is open to interpretation but he is, unlike Fuentes, actually doing things.

I don't know who this Torba person is but Fuentes always struck me as one of those guys we were warned about in Matthew.

That is somone who was mostly in the culture war out of reflexive contrarianism and a desire for personal glory.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
