The same way Dolezal got away with it: it's such a crazy lie that no one questions it. It's obvious in retrospect, when someone is looking, but no one is looking day to day. We overestimate our detective skills reading these things because we're genre savvy, we know we're in a story with something to find out. In real life, we don't suspect there is a secret to detect.

Just a guess: meth can age people in their 20s so badly that nobody will ask questions if you show up to that kind of DV-and-detox scene looking 40. I know two women with unguessable-ages-in-a-bad-way because of that.

Ah. That makes good sense. I don't see know many people like that here, so it didn't occur to me.

I know a woman who as far as I know has never done any drugs, but just looks 40 when she's actually 22. Some people just have old faces.

Wrinkles & all are hard to get at an early age.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
