Culture War Roundup for the week of February 9, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

One interesting twitter debate going on right now is the billionaires prefer waitresses. Maybe not even interesting but complete culture war. The thing I’m seeing for the billionaires don’t marry waitresses is a very pedantic view of waitresses when I think the meaning is more like girl bosses versus attractive girl whose primary goal is not making money but finding a husband.

I do not know if anyone really disagrees with this. Like it’s a spectrum right? Only Jeb Bush married a girl who doesn’t even speak the same language but I assume was very cute. The spectrum is something like Laurene Jobs who did a little corporate prestige jobs and went to Stanford MBA then quit working versus Jeb Bush who just picked a big booty Latina at 18.

I feel like guys often pick the “waitress” over the girl boss. But the people saying the billionaires never pick the waitress are being excessively pedantic. The model isn’t a waitress. The presenter isn’t a waitress (Bezos). The art hoe isn’t a waitress.

I would say the best smart guys tend to marry the Princeton girl early like Bezos or Gates or Zuck. But over 30 the waitress traits start to show up.

Personally I would prefer girl who has career and interesting life but I have way more options in the waitress category of attractive with some things going on.

Got told people didn’t know the debate. I think this is the twitter posts that started it. debate

I'm not on Twitter/X, so I don't know what this is about, and this is one of those times where a link would be helpful. Is the debate "rich guys don't marry poor girls, that's only in fairytales and Hallmark movies" or "rich guys like feminine women who hang off their arms and flutter their eyelashes at them, not hard-charging women competing for corporate jobs"?

Yeah, that's dumb. Rich young men have fun with the wholesome waitresses before settling down to marry women of their own class. If the rich guy makes his money later in life, he's likely (again) to marry a woman of his own general level and background (see Bezos and Mackenzie, before he threw it all up in the air for the bimbo next door). Then when he gets mega-rich he may indeed dump her for the younger trophy wife from a lower background, but in general King Cophetua and the beggar girl is not happening much outside of Regency romances. People who come from money marry money, or those who are around money enough to fit into the lifestyle, so yeah the "ambitious girlboss" who can talk about her C-suite level job at fundraisers. The only wholesome waitresses getting into that level are those who did it while in college for fun, or after they graduated and took a year to 'find themselves' before returning to being Daddy's heiress.

Why are we assuming these men stop fucking dumb waitresses just because they're married. What's the culture war angle here, girls get some education so you can get your techbro founder interested in you at a rationalist party? Fuck that, just being a mistress or camwhore has about the same success rate. Play to your advantage, if the girl cant hack it in private equity or exploit parasocialist tendencies by camwhoring she can make money writing absolutely disgusting romantasy billionaire bestiality fics. That at least is still somewhat immune to western AI encroachment due to guardrails, but over in the East novelslop is already AI pilled.
