This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

Its just tired pro-Z bullshit that insists the west is the big bad conspirator funding colour revolutions and that actually everyone would be happy to live under any autocrats thumb so long as the west is opposed. What always amusing is that the vatnik brigades are WORDS WORDS WORDS with reams of photos and pointing arrows and histories and obscure engineering diagrams that all sound authoritative until a reader notices something doesn't add up and then a mild review shows literally every assumption rests on an insane assumption. The single phone call of Nuland saying Yushenko was "our guy" as if he was a deliberate CIA plant as opposed to simply a guy that made the calculus on his own recognizance that the Russian puppet brigade was doing a terrible job and he himself wouldn't have had access to that circle so to the other guy we go. Yet a single leak was taken as proof of western perfidy, a narrative repeated TILL NOW in vatnik circles that Ukraine actually really wants to join the motherland and the Azov NAFO fascists are suppressing the will of the people.
I get the anti USA animus can manifest in many ways and the totalizing presence of the USA means every axis is a pair of dynamics to flagplant on but like have an original thought please. Textdumping pages of conspiratard shit is for the heyday of tumblr and at least there was interesting porn adjacent to the weirdo walls of crazy.
Truly the second worst part of it was how mind-numbingly boring it could be. You can be a vatnik or a joo poster or whatever else all you want as long as you can mind your manners, but at least be an interesting about it. Interesting people can be interesting when invested in their hobby horses. They shouldn't make people's eyes glaze over predictable and predicted repetitions.
Yeah give me some real red meat for the conspiracy, not just the rehashed stuff. Nuland phone call... Russian language law... Donbass crucifixion...Boris Johnson tearing up peace process... Odessa hotel fire... thats all settled shit that immediately signals someone is holding out like Hiroo Oonada. Give me Zalushnii-Truss love affair, Budanov Azov, Pringles secret army good shit. Something that at least makes it seem the person trying to understand the situation did some novel work instead of just finding the first hits of vatnik wiki and then treated it as truth.

I'm surprised by how popular this view is here on The Motte, either as-is or as a lite version where it's not directly stated but heavily implied. I could understand Russians saying that but seeing people who are clearly Americans based on their other comments embrace it is just so weird.
Its all downstream of culture war. The west, especially USA, is a totalizing and omnipresent factor that will always be available as a common referent. Within the USA there exist multitudes too so people anywhere can pick and choose what they like or dislike (usually dislike) about the west to hold an antipode against as contrast. Race mixing sexual degeneracy offends you? Heres good old orthodox slavic cultural conservatism to hold up. Evangelical eschatology stinks? Heres balinese spiritualism as the counter. Techbro oligarchy ruining your economy? Heres chinese state capitalism for you. Media now filled with ugly trannies drawing attention to themselves? Korean goonerslop to the rescue.
This forum is entirely founded due to culture war issues being unignorable so it seems obvious the russia ukraine war just like any war has a culture war colouring to it. Except because it has real kinetic implications and falsifiability the culture war claims can get tested far quickly, and the smarter ones know better than to tie their brain cells to the sinking ship that is Russian military capability.
I suppose it makes some sort of perverted sense if you think everyone except America, Russia and China are just NPC pawn pieces that cannot have their own motivations or act independently.
