This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

We should aim to treat 10 with psychological interventions. I highly doubt we have exhausted the possibilities for treating the disorder. Have we tried psychedelics, like ecstasy and LSD, to nudge them toward loving themselves? As a last resort, maybe we allow them to neuter themselves, but there is as much relation between “sever junk” and “I’m a beautiful woman” as there is between “sever limb” and “I’m a butterfly”. There is no reason to think that 10 is closer to being a woman than 1. The most adamant transgenders are often the most masculinized behaviorally. In what sense does a 10 who is a video game speedrunner or a fan of Paradox games plausibly know what being a woman involves? It’s likely that they know less about the inner life of women than the average rugby player whose name is literally Chad.
Quite right, it's like those ftm people who film these tearful face-in-camera clips for tiktok about how they never realized men don't have these female-style social attachments and how it's so lonely being a man and how men need to act more like women in affirming eachother. Mindset, worldview and even diction remains female even with some wimpy beard and hairstyle changes on the outside.
There are indeed actual men who go on tiktok and behave like that, there are male feminist types... but it's a very unusual kind of man who does this and many of them might just be faking it for access to pussy.

Let alone the upside of having a penis. I was a speedrunner once. And while I certainly had no desire to be castrated, that sick voice in my head has certainly wondered, at times, whether it would have made me better off.

That is arguably a good first line approach.
But what if you're the person suffering from this kind of body dysphoria and you've tried a number of psychological interventions, nothing works, and you also have bouts of self harm because of how upsetting it is and you're pretty damn sure if you could just have it removed you'd feel a lot better about yourself and there's countless reports on Internet forums from people like you who went through the same thing and life got way better for them?
You know there's a risk it might not help but you're willing to try because you just find yourself wishing you could die with increasing frequency?
