What is something that you completely can not understand why it exists?
From time to to time I notice something and I am like wow there is a market for this.

One big one for me has always been Starbucks. I can not imagine paying their prices for coffee. And I generally want a coffee within the first 15 minutes of waking up so the idea of putting on clothing and going to a coffee store everyday seems both a huge waste of time and money.

So for the most part I can’t understand the volume of business at coffee stores.

Boba tea. Women love it, I'm perplexed by the appeal. Or matcha, which has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It tastes like liquid grass.

I like matcha, but I also like glass jelly and root beer, so some of this might just be a raw different tastes thing. That said, there are some fantastic options for boba; most shops will have mango tea and coconut jelly as an option, and so long as you get it low sugar it's very hard to dislike.

I love root beer, but my fiancée thinks it's disgusting, comparing the taste to Deep Heat, a muscle relaxant cream. (Google tells me the American equivalent is called IcyHot.)

It's an entirely apt comparison: it does taste exactly like Deep Heat. But I still love it. Shame it's so hard to come by in Ireland. Part of me even wants to order a case of Barq's just for the novelty.

I just don't get why europeans (and others, I've heard it from south americans say it too) immediately compare root beer to medicine. It's really consistant too, they all think it, even one who likes it like you agrees with it. To my north american palate, it's a completely distinct taste from any medicine I've ever tasted.

IDK, some root beers, like A&W seem to have a little bit of a wintermint note to them, so I can kinda see it, though I'd totally agree that there's a lot more going on there, flavor-wise. Maybe it's something like the cilantro/soap thing.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
