I feel like I listen to too much angsty/"sad boy music" and want to get into stuff with happier vibes. What's some new stuff to listen to? I generally like hard rock/metal and electronic, but I'm open to anything. I value lyrical complexity a lot, which I think has kept me away from trying most pop.

Not sure what kind of lyrical complexity you need, but if you're a metal fan and want uplifting happier vibes, power metal is the way to go.

Sabaton, Battle Beast, Orden Ogan, and Grailknights as some starting points: generally very uplifting, positive, and high-energy, even if the theme of the song isn't particularly happy in every case, and there are a lot of other bands in this vein. Iron Maiden is also good, but I think a little slower and contemplative than many of their descendants.

How about Fellowship? Power metal with upbeat lyrics and themes.

Do you require specifically modern music?

If not, 80s has a lot of music with happier and more energetic vibes. Even many songs about nuclear war are total bangers (like Iron Maiden’s 2 Minutes to Midnight). The era was also musically and lyrically much more complex compared to today even in mainstream pop.

Iron Maiden famously has many songs with lyrics primarily about epic moments in history, geopolitics, myth, and legend.

I can't help you with lyrical complexity, but if happy boy metal is what you're looking for...

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
