This thread is for anyone working on personal projects to share their progress, and hold themselves somewhat accountable to a group of peers.
Post your project, your progress from last week, and what you hope to accomplish this week.
If you want to be pinged with a reminder asking about your project, let me know, and I'll harass you each week until you cancel the service.

Give this prompt to deepseek flash.
The dude one shotted it for around 10 minutes of work.

I finished the switch to flipbook based explosions, and it does look a lot nicer. I found another flipbook for explosive rounds, and I kinda like it, but there's still something about it that I doesn't sit right with me, and I'll have to keep tweaking it.
I replaced the projectile sprites with some ai slop, and I think it does look a lot nicer, I'm still not sure about the grenade, though.
I also played around with particle render ordering for the projectiles and set it to youngest particle on top. Surprisingly this actually gave me the effect I wanted. I was under the impression that the particle age has no relation to the actual projectile age, as the projectile simulation is not done in the particle system, but somehow it works. One unintended effect is that the grenade comes out on top when you're still covered by the previous one's explosion, but that's actually quite helpful as it shows you where you are, and where the next explosion is going to be. I'm thinking of coming up with some filter that would show the player position even when covered.
Next stop: I'll try to finally add some UI.
How have you been doing @Southkraut?
Fixed my most egregious bugs, and then made another attempt at trying to get an animated character instead of just cylinders hopping around. I'm failing to chart a proper course through the whole topic though; somewhat floundering and flailing about. Not much good to say this week.
Again, I have to say they do look good, but IMO they don't really suit the style of the sprites. Too realistic, I think?
Good news is they're easy to replace, I just have to keep poking at them. The assets I see floating around the web tend to either lean into the realistic, or the cartoony style, so it's a bit tricky. Maybe I can apply some filter on it, let's see.

A coworker posted this competition RealPDE, and I signed up. Though I currently snoozed past the first few weeks.
It's funny that the Navier-Stokes 3D equation proof just got solved via an LLM, its only tangentially related but funny because I was just considering it as a potential PDE. I built out my training pipeline this weekend and did a marble test, but I still need to design my model/loss approach. I was originally thinking of doing a physics-informed-neural-network(PINN) but after looking through it my understanding is that they give us 3D airfoil cross sectionals meaning the actual data follows 3D flow but we only have the 2D slice from PIV. The 2D and 3D Navier-Stokes are sufficiently different from each other that using the 2D as a loss function a-la PINNs is not going to generalize to a 3D real system, and the 3D NS PDE is going to require information that the training/validation data lacks. Meaning a model probably needs to learn everything that the 2D slice doesn't capture(?).
So now I need to read up on physics informed neural operators (PINOs). I really want to explore the Causal Transformer direction, maybe combine it with a PINO since I'm not a mechanical engineer or mathematician and the idea of a SCM applied to DL sounds like it would have interesting applications to me.
I'm unsure if this is sufficiently in-scope for this thread, but considering that I'm probably going to spend a significant amount of free time on this for the next month, I'd classify it as a hobby.

Gardening thread. Does anyone else grow blackberries? I bought a few saplings a few years ago: Marion, 2x Navajo and a Tayberry.
The Tayberry didn't take root, the Navajos grew very well, but their canes couldn't survive local winters, and I got rid of them. The Marion grows better, since I can take the vines down from the trellis and cover them. Tasty, too.
Planting four more this weekend: Columbia Giant, Columbia Star, Brzezina and Prime Ark Freedom. The first three are all trailing plants, like the Marion, so I hope to keep them protected from the frost. Prime Ark is primocane-bearing, so I don't have to protect its canes from the snow. I'll see if it's warm and sunny enough for it to ripen in one season.
