Edit: Apparently I’m an Archeofuturist and a 100% match with Steve Bannon. Never take these seriously but this one is the least bad. I noticed both the short and medium tests lack any questions that directly address race or ethnicity, a major missing component unless I was unlucky in the Q selection.

Federalism (center) - 90%

I believe in federation (like the fediverse): my ideal government is groups organized into hierarchies that mostly regulate themselves and have loosely democratically elected representatives (in this way, like Yud’s dath ilan. In more detail: the representatives are for cross-group conflicts, and the people in the lowest groups and representatives in higher groups act like small neighborhoods, so it’s at least “loosely” democratic in that any individual can significantly affect their group’s policy and representative, like how any individual can significantly affect their small town).

But I also believe in states’ (and towns’) rights, at least to the extent that people can leave (so no slavery, but if a community wants to be racist and exclusionary, I think they should be left alone). I think some “central” entity is useful, but I don’t like strong centralization. Does that go against federalism?

Eco-Conservatism

Well, I've never used that label to describe myself and I don't think I will anytime soon, but nonetheless guilty as charged I suppose. I've always been convinced that conserving nature is conservative, not progressive. I've read too much Tolkien as a teenager, so now I'm immune to the pervasive but incoherent culture war dichotomy of our age which somehow imagines destroying nature in favour of economic liberalism as conservative and opposing that as progressive. Scrolling down a bit, in "other matches" it gives Christian Democracy and Distributism, which are labels I'm more likely to identify with, so fair enough. Contrary to a lot of these types of political tests I feel like this one actually captured my political values pretty well.

Libertarian militarism for me. As a strongly pro 2A libertarian whose faith in open borders has been fairly well broken by the last decade, that sounds about right. It looks like I'm a little too nationalist for a full libertarian sweep, but otherwise stick pretty close to the expected branding.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
