The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:
-
Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.
-
Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.
-
Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.
-
Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

Hey, remember when I stepped on that rusty screw?
Well, after the antibiotics kicked in, it healed pretty quickly. All better now.
Now my problem is that the antibiotics wrecked my guts, and my chronic constipation has given me a monster hemorrhoid. The kind of hemorrhoid where you can't wait to get home from work, take a hot shower, and gently push it back inside your asshole where it can heal and stop bothering you.
Getting old is fun.
At the risk of proposing an obvious solution, why not take psyllium husk every day?
Go to Amazon. Buy this Metamucil. Add two teaspoons to 8 ounces of water every morning and drink it. If not working, do it in the afternoon as well.
Manages blood sugar. Lowers cholesterol. Your poops will be perfect. Really everyone should use it.
I have been wondering, is there any downside to this?
The downside is that you need two hours before (edit: or after) any medications, as the fibrous gel the psyllium husk turns into will inhibit absorption of the med and it (the medication) won't work as intended. For meds taken at mealtimes or before bed this is something to consider.
Psyllium husk is simply fiber. That's it. Unlike chia seed, there is no fat or protein in there.
Also if you don't drink enough water with it (at least 250 ml preferably another 250 on top of that, if you're doing 5g) you risk worse constipation, or the kind of voiding your bowels that will leave you feeling...let's say bad. So drink enough water.
You also want to drink it 20 minutes or so away from eating.
The added benefit is that if you drink it in the a.m. you're hydrating well first thing.
Been taking it around 6 months. It's not a miracle, it won't cure IBD, but it may help, and it's worthwhile.
If a doctor wants to step in and tell me all of this is wrong, I'll concede and rethink.
Pretty good advice in this thread. The biggest risk factor is choking if you don't put it in enough water, but that's an easy thing to avoid.
I'd also recommend just buying Metamucil or another highly reputable brand for various reasons.
