Wellness Wednesday for October 14, 2026

The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:

  • Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.

  • Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.

  • Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.

  • Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

Dating: How does one answer the, “what do you do for fun,” question? I’m pretty sure I can’t tell her that I like watching insane political YouTubers, following stupid internet drama, watching football, and analyzing classical music scores (or can I? I’ve never actually tried this).

You honestly and straightforwardly say what you do for fun. You don't want to invest a bunch of time and emotional energy into a girl only to find out she hates your hobbies, get stuff out of the way up front.

This is true but I will add that it's only important that she doesn't actively hate your hobbies and activities. Over time, sometimes women adopt the hobbies or interests of their men if they are introduced in a way that interests them naturally, as long as they were neutral to the hobby/interest in the first place. A woman may never be interested in competitive e-sports, but she might get into anime if you show her some rom-coms.

Meaning, you don't need to mention an interest in anime initially because some women might assume you're a unhygienic anime obsessed nerd.

I agree that it's only important she doesn't hate your hobbies. If she shares them, cool, but it ultimately isn't a big deal. It's healthy for a couple to have interests outside of each other anyway, you don't have to be into the same exact pastimes.

I would also add, upon reflection, that how early you bring up issues is largely proportional to how important they are to you. If watching anime is the most important thing in your life, and you would never accept anything less than the most weeb existence imaginable, then it makes sense to mention it as soon as possible so you aren't wasting your time. But if it's just something you do on occasion, it isn't something you really need to prioritize mentioning in conversation.
