This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Again, I didn't ask you, or anyone, what to use my knife for, and neither so for the body. Non-theoretically, people do all manner of things with their tools, such as collecting nice cars (or knives) to set them up in a viewing stand, or using them in specific occasions that do not match up to your imagined, monadically perfect telos. So it is with bodies.
Buying a car to just let it sit is a waste. There's a lot of economic value and enjoyment that could have been had out of driving that car, in fulfillment of it's intended purpose.
Of course a good society should tolerate some level of waste, and even encourage it in many cases. If I throw away a half eaten baloney sandwich nobody is going to argue that it's not a waste. But trying to optimize that waste away has costs and is not worth it. Even perfect capitalism, with efficient markets and revealed preferences, produces wastes. That's a good thing.
But irregardless of whether it's an economically ideal and/or utility maximizing decision, that doesn't change the fact that the baloney sandwich is food and throwing it in the trash is wasting it.
Refer to the other comment. Things made by men for some particular purpose are not of the same kind as things that are men.
That in addition to the fact that there are no such things as objective purposes.
Who are you to say that the owner would enjoy driving it more than he enjoys letting it sit? Or that you would? Intended by whom?
Car dealerships are based around buying cars and then not driving them - so they can be sold for mint value.
I would not argue that the half-eaten baloney sandwich isn't "food waste" in its technical definition. I would argue that by not eating it completely, you have not committed some higher order of waste. You didn't feel like it. It will look like waste to the hungry bum who watched you toss it, but that's not philosophy, that's just hunger and jealousy.
Purpose comes before the tool. If you want to avoid waste, you don't start eating sandwiches despite being full. You avoid buying them in the first place.
Do you think a pig would agree that its purpose is to become the baloney sandwich?
Who is to set the purpose of any particular person but themself? There is no one else to hypothetically live their life in their place. No one who could have eaten that sandwich, or driven that car.

Yes, and some people use the language of 'ruining your body' to talk about pregnancy, which I find incorrect.
If you'd rather keep women's bodies in a viewing stand, that's your preference, but there is no need to shame birthing people (or people of birth?).
I don't shame women who choose to bear children or men who choose to work in the mines. It is simply a fact that such things place a wear on the body that many find undesirable and some do not know about, being affected by the overly romanticized picture of childbirth or working trades. If you'd rather experience grandfatherhood as a pained physical wreck after proudly using your body for all it's worth rather than taking a more measured approach, you're welcome to.
Addendum: if bodies are tools they are tools of a very different kind than a knife or a car. Purpose comes first in all acts where a tool might be used, and then comes the tool. A man would be regarded as unwise if he acquired a hammer for no particular reason and then came looking for nails to pound. (There is an entire proverb about that.) A body on the other hand is acquired before any purpose can be conceived, not to mention being instrumental in conceiving its, or any, purposes in the first place.
