Midterms Megathread

Cause otherwise midterms discussion will be scattered around a bunch of separate Culture War thread posts. And it's nice to have more off-the-cuff rapid reactions in a dedicated megathread.

The first thing I've noticed so far: if the exit polls are correct, Americans are very pessimistic about AI.

That's why I think DeSantis is the Republican's best bet in 2028. He's the only one not tainted by this mess and he can point to his incredible record as a governor.

Maybe. But DeSantis will look ugly and fat on stage next to slick Newsom. In the battle of the white guys, glistening California will beat sweaty Florida. It would be a campaign with almost zero policy, a lot of traded insults, some macho posturing on both sides, and then Newsom would win.

Newsom is DOA and has no chance getting through the Dem Primary, especially since the 2024 rework of the order the primaries are done to give more power to the Black political machine in SC and elsewhere. Even bringing the guy up is nonserious. You're looking at Jon Ossof, Andy Bashear, Gretchen Witmer, Josh Shapiro in that order.

I still feel like there’s a good chance the 2028 Dem nominee is a relative outsider, someone who’s not currently a national name. I’ll be surprised if AOC isn’t a player, although she’s not at all likely to win it imo. Given the way things are going right now I kind of doubt it’s going to be a Jewish guy, either, although that could change. It’s true that Ossoff looks pretty damn good after Tuesday. I do also agree that Newsom is not going to be the guy.

Running Newsom would be a huge mistake. The guy is like a caricature of a smarmy politician. They need Ossoff or Beshear.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
