Midterms Megathread

Cause otherwise midterms discussion will be scattered around a bunch of separate Culture War thread posts. And it's nice to have more off-the-cuff rapid reactions in a dedicated megathread.

The first thing I've noticed so far: if the exit polls are correct, Americans are very pessimistic about AI.

GPUs will not replace us!

One thing I'm very much looking forward to is all the anti immigration types who don't want migrants taking their jobs getting tufted out by GPUs instead, either directly or because the GPUs took over smart people jobs and now those smart people are beating the aforementioned types at their own vocation.

I mean doesn't this vindicate the anti-immigration types when it's kind of nonsensical to bring in bulk amounts of new people who are going to be difficult to employ in the current years and therefore add additional pressure to whatever welfare-adjacent system comes up. I know if somebody was to try and immigrate to Pakistan that you'd want them as an indentured servant at best, so clearly your views are purely self-serving.

Malice as a fantasy is a sign that you are lashing out emotionally. You want people who didn't want to lose their jobs to lose their jobs? I wouldn't gloat about that if I were you.

Nah, I want the people who don't want immigrants because they don't like competition for their jobs and want to keep extracting economic rents for being born on a specific piece of rock to be put in their place, and if it's a GPU that does it, so be it.

You're on thin ice with the race-baiting triumphalism you've been ramping up again lately. I'm letting it go because we certainly have white nationalists who say things just as bad about their outgroup, but your history is particularly bad and you're only getting a pass because your last final warning was seven months ago. But I can very clearly see that you're having fun trolling again. I still don't think banning you would be any loss.

It's a fair question, but like many valid questions, there are thoughtful ways to discuss it, and there are belligerently eye-poking ways meant to provoke people. The former is called discussion, and is suitable for a discussion forum. The latter is called trolling, and is not.

Climate change refugees, or "refugees". It's not just about money. The West is simply more functional than a lot of the world. People won't stop coming, especially as shocks happen.

That may happen, but fiscal problems from immigration haven't yet stopped immigration in the US (where it impacted blue municipalities under Biden) or Europe (where many migrant groups famously don't pay for themselves and yet there's no stop yet)

Maybe UBI's simplicity will make what's being paid to foreigners more legible to the average man and cause the backlash (Biden almost certainly suffered from the sense that the border was out of control, as well as inflation). But it's not certain.

This is assuming that all countries will be equally good at allocating gibs. Even if ultra global socialism hits I'm still pretty skeptical the people of Gabon will have the same gibs accessibility as the people of Marseille.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
