Is there a free "put podcast in, get transcript out" site the way there are hundreds of "put video-site URL in, get mp3 out" sites?

It looks like the online price of audio transcription still pretty high - AWS and azure have prices around 1-1.5 (on demand) / 0.5 (pre-commitment) dollars per hour of audio, and otter.ai's pro plan seems to cost $0.2/hour transcribed (but they might be pricing in usage under the limit). That's a bit expensive for a free service one uploads podcasts to, if you're trying to make money via ads.

Maybe you can run one of OpenAI's whisper models (or maybe there's a better open transcription model) locally? I think it takes a while though.

Plenty of the paid services (otter descript etc) have free tiers where you get a few hours per month.

AI-assisted transcripts have gotten way better recently so I'll see about including one by default in the future

Make sure to try out Whisper from OpenAI. It's both free and the SOTA, you'll be impressed.

I don’t like podcast formats, but to get this story, it’s that or pay the Philly Inquirer.

It lets me in. Probably something to do with JavaScript or cookies (I have both off by default and only turn them on if something won't work).

I also don't really go in for podcasts.

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
