Israel-Gaza Megathread #1

This is a megathread for any posts on the conflict between (so far, and so far as I know) Hamas and the Israeli government, as well as related geopolitics. Culture War thread rules apply.

What's a good anti-tunnel strategy for the Israelis? A few things immediately come to mind:

  1. Blowing them up / collapsing them
  2. Flooding with water
  3. Sealing / flooding with concrete & rubble
  4. Attacking clean air with smoke / toxins
  5. Occupation / patrol / drones / auto turrets

I think the tunnels are the main infrastructure advantage for Hamas, and Israel will need to confront them directly somehow.

My first thought would be flood 'em but given this is a desert the best solution is probably to ignore them. Forget fighting in Gaza, forget even bothering to bomb Gaza. Instead shut off the water, shut off the electricity, mine the port, and wait.

The siege ends when all hostages have been safely returned and whoever masterminded the attack delivered before the Knesset in chains.

The problem is that ends with a humanitarian crisis, Israel as a pariah state, the US (under the next administration, probably) cutting them off, and then the Arabs starting another full scale war against them (also with Iran's backing) with them surviving or not on their own. And maybe some areas of glass desert.

It could end with the Hostages released, and the crisis largely averted.

The Palestinians say they want "self-determination"? I say present them with the opportunity.
