Culture War Roundup for the week of September 19, 2022

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Does anyone else here know this feeling / have any advice?

You and your coworker are suffering from a condition that zoomers would prescribe "touching grass" as a solution to.

Honest advice. Get a grip.

Life is still unkind to most people in the World. Poverty, Death and Disease are a reality for everyone in the world. While you are lamenting about how your descendants will look 300 years from now, your Third World analogue is lamenting the early death of his wife to Tuberculosis.

Living in a racially heterogeneous society is like the 50th thing you should worry about if you want your descendants to live a good life. So you either are ignorant about how bad those 49 other things are or you think this thing is possibly so bad that it is that much more dreadful, neither of which paints you in a rational light.

For all you know your great^n descendants could be murderers and rapists. They could like in a nuclear wasteland. They could be homeless etc. They could be CHINESE. Just take the problem of raising your own children to be the kind of people who will take raising their own children seriously as well, and you will kind find yourself not worrying about what they will look like 200 years later.

The hypothetical politics [+demographics] of the future should not be keeping you up at night, the matters of self improvement and your own immediate family (NOW IN THE PRESENT) and their well being should. Keep your spouse happy, keep your parents happy, keep your kids happy, be useful to your friends, your community and yourself. Embody good culture within yourself and live it, instead of lamenting its dilution through the gene pool. Walk the walk.

The desire to not slide into third world status is precisely the reason so many Westerners do feel this dread. Many feel blessed that their culture has allowed them to solve the tuberculosis problem, among other problems. They worry that an increase in populations from less developed nations could make their descendant’s quality of life worse. And if we’re doing comparisons, at least the TB sufferer did not see his family raped and murdered like in South Africa. And I mean we can go all the way back in time, “why worry about sick? Grug froze and die chasing mammoth. Grug tribe all perish.” But this misses the mark. It’s a completely reasonable fear to not want one’s life worse, even though there are yet worse lives. That’s actually the whole purpose of fear, to prevent worse states.

how descendants will look like

But appearance is related to traits in the animal kingdom, and the science on genetics points to traits in genetic clusters. So it’s more than skin deep.

I think you are weakmanning my argument by boiling it down to "just because worse things exist doesn't mean my complaints are invalid".

My argument is basically if OP has enough mental energy to worry about "how his descendants will look like 200 years later", I can just about guarantee you OP isn't worrying about his descendants enough right now in the present.

Unless OP's life is that good that he doesn't have to worry about his kids but his kids;kids;kids.

Edit - OP is falling into the midwit trap. Which is dispensing simple wisdom for overly complicated theory.

low iq - "Just live a good life yourself ,man"

midwit - "The demographic trends now show that within n years, the expected gdp/capita is going to be y"

high iq - "Just live a good life yourself, man. Culture is created bottom up from the individual. Don't lament that which is outside your control and outside your understanding. If everyone seriously aims to live a good life himself, society will be good. Live in a way that inspires your community and kids to follow, and culture will create itself, and your kids will perpetuate and spread it. "

I'm arguing for strength not weakness, in the face of adversity.

Can you please not use the midwit meme? You might as well just say “You’re a retard”, but for some reason the mods tolerate one but would never tolerate the other

Also this might just be me, but I automatically assume anyone who uses that word thinks they are demonstrating high intelligence by declaring anyone of average intelligence stupid compared to them. And I assume those people are compensating for the insecurity they feel about their average intelligence.

If you can decouple the "wit" from the midwit meme, it's a very congent vehicle for the idea 'that complicated is not better than simple'. That "wit" is ranked on clarity/coherence of ideas as opposed surface level complexity.

So no, I quite like the meme.

It just leads to the exchange currently taking place between you and 6tjk which amounts to “No you’re the midwit”. You could have made the point without the meme and it would have been better taken
