But here shouldn't the ire also be directed at those who make and enforce the laws? It seems we have a legislature and those who enforce the laws who allow Insurance CEOs to behave to the detriment of society. If we had better laws or enforcement I could imagine people not being as mad at their health insurance. Anger at CEOs maximizing profits seems akin to anger at dogs barking.

Yeah the enthusiasm from 'hags' is odd. I sometimes wonder if it's a desire for male attention, interaction without a sexual relationship undertone. Flirting for people who don't have their social training-wheels off yet. Is the equivalent where gay men are obsessed with young beautiful women celebrities in non-sexual way (previously Madonna, now Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga)?

I don't think incest is a really royal 'kink' rather a political driven byproduct under a hereditary system where marriage is limited between royal or formerly royal families, further limited by religion (rare Catholics and Protestant intermarriages, and only one royal Orthodox country [though Montenegro punches above its weight before WWI]), and treaty considerations. Which under a paucity of male dynasts can exasperate the situation. So Spanish Hapsburg infantas are marrying Austrian Hapsburgs Archdukes to prevent a succession of their enemies the French Bourbons.

Frank Baum has the Wicked Witch of the East rule over the enslaved Munchkins, while the Wicked Witch of the West rules over the Winkies (who I think are made of porcelain?). Macquire the author of Wicked has a much more positive view and sympathetic backstory of the 'Wicked' Witches (but I haven't read and have only seen the first film of Wicked).

One thought experiment I had was to read the to reddit Mangione (who in my opinion while crazy probably deserves to be executed for his lack of remorse) comments/apologetics and imagine if they were instead written about the Minnesota killings. It was really quite sickening. I really think Reddit allowing those comments and that response for essentially a vigilante lynching, is opening the overton window for copycat behavior of all stripes.

I have a wonderful relationship with both my parents. I strive to live with the values they instilled growing up. My parents raised me Catholic, and I strive to be an active member of my parish. My parents provided all star educational opportunities to my siblings and I that I fear aren't available to truly middle class earners. For failings there are some health and lifestyle choices I know should correct, but fall into the trap of a busy working professional. The love and support from my parents I try to cultivate and grow with my siblings as they a lead their families.

I played when I was younger, really enjoyed it. I asked my brother about the cards we had growing up and he said he donated them to goodwill. Aww well!

I also agree you're coming on a bit strong, but to me but I think the odd contrast from the doctor is solely because of the last line signaling a kinship of ideas. If instead of that last trans-humanist line, the post stated other beliefs we'd could instead be treated to some Chat gpt regurgitated remark of joy at the absence of a god-shaped hole.

I remember giving someone the definition of rationalist as someone who thinks they're smarter and more logical than other people.

A quibble but Albania was just communist and was a member of the Warsaw Pact Member, so was aligned with but was never a part of USSR.

Long ago I would similarly devour Agatha Christie books, my favorite was Lord Edgeware Dies. Since I read them when I younger, I wonder how much of the social situations went over my head and how enjoyable it would be to reread them now.

Congrats! What did you invest in? I'm similarly trying to save, and watching it grow. Sometimes I wonder if it's just inflation in action; as the number goes up in today money.

Watching dinosaurs attack people in thrilling ways is pretty awesome in my book. If the movie doesn't feature that I'd be disappointed. Did you not enjoy it because it was a weak plot? I think some of the previous sequels have beat some of the themes extinct (I never saw the Chris Pratt one). But I expect it to be like another action movie. I intend on seeing it soon.

A law removing long-standing rights isn't likely to stand. I'm unsure how it works with JWs, but the practice of Catholic confessions (behind a screen in a dark room, anonymous option) nullifies testimony. Are sexual offenders going to testify that they confessed their sins and then the priest didn't provide testimony to the state? Will the state be bugging confessionals?

Should Washington state consider revoking other privileged positions? Why should spouse, lawyer and doctor be exempt?

Edit: Reading the text of the law there is more leagalise to parse through in regards to the responsibilities of medical personnel if understand it correctly https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2025-26/Pdf/Bills/Senate%20Passed%20Legislature/5375.PL.pdf#page=1

Yeah the Papacy allowing the annulment of the already married King of France Louis XII to marry the widow Duchess of Brittany of the previous king (the kings were cousins) just a few years before looks nakedly political. If Catherine been any other woman and not been related so closely to the Holy Roman Emperor I suspect the annulment would have granted, and her forced into a convent. The king's great matter had the unfortunate affect of no betrothals turning into marriage for Mary I, if she had married earlier we could have seen Hapsburg England! So only one of Henry VIII's children inclined to procreate never got the opportunity.

Have you played any of them? Are they fun? I've played the Crusader Kings Board game (just solo) but really enjoyed it.

Is the term you are leading toward learned helplessness?

Time is a terrible thing to waste. The question to be asked of younger folk not using their time employed or in education is "How are you going to fund your retirement?" Working hard and making money in your 20s / 30s I think definitely beats working as an old person. Banking on the AI miracle seems too low probability to me. The adage I think of is the job you are doing now often leads to what you do in the future. And short unemployment begets long-term unemployment.

I think of the survivor who jumped from the Golden Gate bridge- all their problems suddenly seemed very solvable. What I see in friends and colleagues is a lack of faith (organized religion) that is coupled or leads to a lack of optimism in the world; and I think poor planning for their future (you're saving how much for retirement!). But I guess a Marxist interpretation would be the false lies distort a workers' view to accept their station in life. I guess my point is a strict reasoning and rationalist approach to life can be more harmful given certain personal characteristics and the human capacity of self delusion.

One thought I've had is for alcoholics or drug addicts or really anyone, is there a convincing rationalist answer for why people should quit or not use destructive drugs? Without a higher power, why not abuse substances? If you live your life in isolation and are so inclined, I don't think there is a rationalist reason not to be selfish and NEET? Some times I wonder if belief and faith has a way of finding those who need it most.

"Technological society has succeeded in multiplying the opportunities for pleasure, but it has great difficulty in generating joy." Paul VI in GAUDETE IN DOMINO.

One failure mode of a good employee is where all your effort and good will for management is captured by your immediate supervisor but then they don't advance you further up the ladder because you're so productive in your current role. Usually this is remedied by switching jobs. Maybe I'm mediocre but mostly everyone I know of get Meets Expectations, usually because supervisors see it as a perfunctory task, instead of something that could be instructive. Not sure how it works in Australia, but in the US the pattern is usually a bad performance evaluation and an action plan for improvement once they decide to let you go. But sounds like you might get a better position if you get a new one.

I honestly think self esteem is a choice. Who cares what other people think? Only you can decide to feel inferior. As a man, who you are, what you do, and thirdly what you believe matters more. If you already have high educational attainment and social status, why do you care about how others perceive you? Seems like a hedonistic treadmill effect. Maybe this is the key to your everlasting happiness, but I doubt it.

Edited to add authors!

I'm reading A Farewell to Arms (Hemingway) so far so good, trying to read more and limit screen time. Recently finished the Beautiful and the Damned (Fitzgerald) was a slower start but once the bride enters the scene what a trip.

Elif Batuman, Possessed (beware has a lot of Russian novel references but even without that is pretty fasted paced with stories and asides). Another really gripping memoir read is the Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. For fiction the Secret History by Donna Tartt, its longer and maybe not as fast paced but I found I read it quickly. Reading some parts were like eating dessert.
