Way too much whitespace

When I use new.reddit I feel like content is being hidden from me on purpose.

It is not quite as bad here. But compare the previous site with here when I collapse threads

Someone wrote some CSS for the Astral Codex Ten when it first launched to make it not suck so much. Can anyone do something so that

  1. if there is content I get to see it on my screen?

  2. make following threads easier than counting the number of bars on the left hand side while remembering to distinguish bars-from-threading from bars-from-blockquoting?

Seconded. Lots of places can be tightened up. At the very least the space between username and comment, and between comment and like/dislike, can be reduced 50% or more probably. Space between comments too. Paragraph spacing within comments can probably be tightened a little bit too.

too many white people here too. Seriously, whiteness needs to be eliminated.

The comments thread, specifically, needs a lot of work; I didn't have time to get to that. I'm hopefully going to be giving it a revamp this week.

I don't know if it sounds stupid, but shouldn't the default idea just be "exactly as it looked like on Reddit, or a close approximation"? Then carefully develop it if there's something approximating a site consensus.

I am hoping a computer person can extract the exact CSS or whatever from an old.reddit.com comments view and implement the exact same thing here. The tiny text, oceans of whitespace and unfamiliar UI widget placement here makes it difficult for me to use this forum.

This site is based off a streamlined version of rDrama.net’s system, which was based off of (although much work has been done), on the now defunct Ruqquz.xyz. RDrama’s system was not trying to recreate Reddit, instead going for the best thing for its community. A lot of these have been changed, but not all. CSS is supported for this site, so if you want to change it just for yourself there you go, if you want to change it for the whole site complain enough.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
