Culture War Roundup for the week of September 8, 2025

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Tyler Robinson, Kirk shooter, has been caught after a family friend turned him in

The markings on the bullets described by authorities indicate that the suspect, Tyler Robinson, was steeped in online culture and included references to the Antifa , or the anti-fascist, movement. A fired shell casing was inscribed with “notices bulges OwO what’s this?” - a reference to a “copypasta” - a piece of text that is repeated over and over again, often to troll people online.

Authorities say one unfired casing had the words “Hey fascist, catch!” and three down arrows - a common symbol used to represent the anti-fascist movement. A second casing had the lyrics to a song “Bella Ciao” inscribed on it. The song honours WWII-era partisans of the Italian resistance who fought Nazi Germany.

The third unfired casing was inscribed with the words “If you read this, you are gay lmao” - again an apparent reference to online trolling humour.

Parents, keep your kids away from Discord. Will be interesting to see if this guy is a true believer or just ragebaiting.

So I was holding this back until confirmation, but honestly, I don't know if I can blame anybody for believing this is a false flag. Not that I think it is, but come on, if you prompted a Hollywood writer to come up with a scene about "killing discourse / debate / free speech", would anyone come up with something better than "milquetoast political pundit, who likes to make appearances under the tagline 'change my mind' gets shot in the throat by a political opponent, during a Q&A at a university, as a member of the audience is making a comment on how peaceful the other side of the political spectrum is"?

Too symbolic. Too surreal. Simulation theory confirmed.

In this context, what does it mean for something to be a false flag ?

  • Someone else killed him. They got the wrong guy.
  • It's the right killer, but he was not working alone. He did this on direct instruction from a 3rd party.
  • The killer was working alone. But, was targeted to be radicalized without his awareness. Some malicious party that even he is unaware of is orchestrating his brainwashing.

According to the posters on /r/somethingiswrong2024 it was the Heritage Foundation who murdered him. That would be a false flag attack.

It means the flag the ship was sailing under was false.

So something like, he's not a tranny leftist, he's a rightist who wants to draw down wrath on tranny leftists.

(Tongue in cheek) Throwing this out there as a proposal: it's a double false flag, a lefty pretending to be a righty pretending to be a lefty. All the hints that he's a right-wing 4chan kid are so explicit that no one earnestly trying to cover his tracks would be so obvious.

The reality is he's an Isma'ili muslim shown visions of paradise while under the influence in a castle in Persia, and the entire rest of his life is a series of ruses designed to throw us off the scent. But we won't be fooled! We know the Safavid-Ottoman conflict has moved to NYC, where else can the Isma'ili menace be found than in Utah?

"Utah" is basically one letter away from "Ummah". The kabbalistic implications should be obvious.

In this context, what does it mean for something to be a false flag ?

"The Drumpf finally wants to declare himself the God Emperor, so he directed the CIA to engineer an assasination that will turn the nation's hearts and minds against his political opposition", or something.
