Culture War Roundup for the week of February 2, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

I generally stay away from reddit's /r/conspiracy board because it often just repeats what's been said in these threads a week late. But, I believe we have, perhaps, the funniest one I've seen in a long time.

Admittedly, I read the "Epstein didn't kill himself" angle as though he was murdered. But the latest iteration of the meme takes a hilarious new angle- that Epstein was taken out of prison, replaced with a dead lookalike, and now has grown out his beard and wears sun glasses, with an idf security detail following him around everywhere.

The clincher here, the funniest bit of the claim, if you will, is that the fortnite account, littlestjeff1, is his. To wit: that is in fact an active account and has been active through 2025 into today.

And, given that his xbox live account had been banned, and that there are references to littlestjeff1 - in the files (a YouTube purchase shares that exact name) lends credence to the theory.

I'm still skeptical, as it ascribes to netanyahu/idf intelligence a level of power that seems unreasonable on multiple layers, but it would be the very, very funniest writing of this season if the thing that gave away his cover was a public (now-private) fortnite profile, of all things.

Come on Jeff, if you're really alive, at least switch to Apex Legends.

From the thread, you can even see that the Fortnite season playtime activity for the account drops greatly during the time he was in prison. The account went private within hours of discovery. Archive.org snapshot was taken down too.

I believe it.

So, Jeff is public enough that he names his Fortnite account after his island and himself, but privacy conscious enough that he immediately goes private as soon as he’s “discovered” (and not when the files were released, by the way, but when gamers online start talking about it)?

This reminds me of the maxwellhill conspiracies, in that there's a sort of semi-flattery by those who posit them that evil world-controlling billionaires do the same things for fun that the lazy and unemployed members of /r/conspiracy do. (Also in that they are retarded and the smallest amount of skepticism derails them instantly)

Why wouldn't they? The rich billionaires, celebrities and world leaders all use the same social media as the rest of us. Everyone from Elon Musk to Kim Kardashian to Keir Starmer to the Rock is on the mainstream social networks. Even with Reddit, we know lots of famous people who use the site. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rick Astley, Colorado Governor Polis. Anthony Bourdain was using it a lot before he died, he has an account created 11 years ago! And those are just the ones we know, I'm sure a lot of them have alts for saying things without risking PR problems.

Likewise we know the rich and powerful and influential use the same media we do. From hollywood movies to the top charting music, they're using Netflix and Spotify like the rest.

So why not games too? Elon Musk plays Diablo, AOC used to play League of Legends, there's a report that Bashar Al-Assad is spending a lot of his time in Moscow just playing a bunch of online video games nowadays. In fact rich people also playing games is what I expect. They're the demographic of whales who can just keep throwing money at something without care..

I would love to find out someday that Bashar al-Assad was the temporary Emperor of Tamriel for a month in Elder Scrolls Online, holding the city against all attackers through keen tactical plans and good structural strategy.

This seems unlikely, considering his record of managing the war in Syria....
