Wellness Wednesday for July 22, 2026

The Wednesday Wellness threads are meant to encourage users to ask for and provide advice and motivation to improve their lives. It isn't intended as a 'containment thread' and any content which could go here could instead be posted in its own thread. You could post:

  • Requests for advice and / or encouragement. On basically any topic and for any scale of problem.

  • Updates to let us know how you are doing. This provides valuable feedback on past advice / encouragement and will hopefully make people feel a little more motivated to follow through. If you want to be reminded to post your update, see the post titled 'update reminders', below.

  • Advice. This can be in response to a request for advice or just something that you think could be generally useful for many people here.

  • Encouragement. Probably best directed at specific users, but if you feel like just encouraging people in general I don't think anyone is going to object. I don't think I really need to say this, but just to be clear; encouragement should have a generally positive tone and not shame people (if people feel that shame might be an effective tool for motivating people, please discuss this so we can form a group consensus on how to use it rather than just trying it).

Lentil and carrot salad is awesome. It lasts days and days. And it's full of carrots and lentils!

I also made the san franciscano beans in the crock pot with just salted water. Then I sprinkle them with some cheese on top of some tortilla chips. Put in the toaster oven for a few minutes and then sprinkle with chopped lettuce. It works out really nicely. Not as convenient as the lentil & carrot salad though.

I kept some of the bean water and I am debating seeing if I can turn it into meringue like you can with garbanzo bean water. How weird would that be?

These beans are cooking up easily. Still skipping the soaking. I have about half a pound of prepared beans left, and 2 lbs of dried beans.

I may have to pause the bean experiments though because my daughter says she misses biscuits and gravy. Biscuits are no problem but my husband made the gravy. I guess between the two of us we can figure it out. But I envision a lot of X-and-mediocre-gravy meals until we get it dialed in.

I love beans, but I live in an area with incredibly hard water. So far the only option I've found is to use water from the store if I don't want leather-skinned beans. Baking soda works, but it messes with the flavor and texture.

Does anybody here have a better solution?

It is possible to install a water-softening machine, acting either on the entire house's water intake or just on a single faucet.

I've looked at water softeners, but I've had a lot of people warn me that they'll obliterate older copper and cast iron pipes because the protective limescale will dissolve. Is there anything to that, or is it an old wives' tale?

Manufacturers' manuals (1 2) indicate that reverse-osmosis systems can make water acidic enough to corrode copper pipes. But water softening is not reverse osmosis.

This document from a (biased) trade association cites studies conducted by the US EPA and the UK Water Treatment Association for the conclusion that water softeners do not increase corrosion in copper and steel pipes. It also says that lime scale does not protect against corrosion.
