Speaking of the Scott survey, I looked over some previous ACX surveys, and there is about a 20:1 ratio of ethnic Jews to black people. This is approximately a 100:1 relative overrepresentation given the geographic demographic profile of Scott's readers.

11% or so are Jewish. This tracks generally with the 5x overrepresentation you see in many groups where most or all members are cognitively well above the IQ average but which are not, for cultural or communal reasons, ‘specifically Jewish’.

For example, I think around 10% of congress is Jewish, or was for a long time. I would guess things like Fortune 500 executives, leading authors, scientific researchers, more cognitively challenging specialty doctors etc are maybe also around 10% Jewish in the US. Hollywood might be more like 30% (albeit declining rapidly), and finance maybe 20%, but this is above the ‘default’ overrepresentation and reflects actual cultural preference (Jews have been very overrepresented as bankers, actors, publishers and theater impresarios for many centuries).

I mean, yes, obviously? What's next, are you going to point out that the survey is (4682+121)/(4682+121+610+21) = 88% men? Come on.

What's the overrepresentation ratio for creationists vs. atheists?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
