This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Berkson’s paradox.
If they were hot (viz. slim, with no tattoos, weird piercings, or unnatural hair colors) and socially adept, they wouldn’t be single. Asian women are, statistically, very likely to be hot, ergo the single ones must necessarily be socially inept. Single white women, on the other hand, are very often not hot, hence they are paradoxically more socially adept on average.
I mean it depends. In my dating I definitely overindexed for 'Mid-Twenties non-fat pleasant Asian girl with a decent degree/start to career who is now getting pilloried by parents to date despite being forbidden until this moment'-types, and I'd say the failure mode there tends to be a lot of situations where you get like 2-3 dates in of polite workchat and I personally wasn't driving hard anywhere since I respected their inexperience enough I didn't particularly want to escalate to sex unless I really liked the girl and the girl in question didn't really drive to anywhere out of a combination of timidity and not really understanding how to drop the proverbial handkerchief. Thus a decent amount of fizzles with girls who I've got a soft spot for, but based on my Instagram feed a lot of them 5 years later don't seem to have found a boyfriend yet.
Which is bad for society, IMO, I eventually found one I liked well enough to escalate and now I'm married/2 kids, but a lot of these girls are pleasant, salt-of-the-earth UMC-types who are just kinda single forever due to timidity. As opposed to white girl failure mode which tended to resemble way more 'I got pump and dumped once or twice now I'm reclaiming my sex life by dating around forever' or 'hilariously bad mate choice forever'.
I definitely think @Botond173 has the right idea, in that a lot of these girls just don't really have a romantic model (or if they do it's an absurd super slow burn Kdrama 40-episode season till some handholding occurs) or a sense of how to encourage interest in a tacit way
Then your parents needed to make sure you respected women in the appropriate measure (rather than respect women enough to disqualify yourself) and in not doing so I honestly think they failed you as hard as 1950-1970s traditionalist fathers did their daughters by encouraging them to be housewives in the face of... absurd unprecedented opportunity to do literally anything else.
It's not like they knew any better, for the same reason parents in the 1960s didn't know any better. And yet.
I mean I'm married with children now with one of those girls who I actually felt the click with. Admittedly I was fortunate enough to be attractive enough to get a lot of lots in the proverbial draw, and if I just wanted to get my dick wet then I'd likely do better playing the doodle-tattooed white girls

The same phenomenon was described in this comment chain extensively by @2D3D.
Tragically I forgot the password and email to forgotpassword. Funny how this topic comes around again.
