Culture War Roundup for the week of November 2, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

I don’t disagree. I am an agnostic and despise Islam. I was just trying to steel man the belief of a naive progressive. I doubt he’d be okay with his daughter or sister dressing like a typical westerner. I actually kind of agree with him there though because it’s actually pretty crazy how a lot of young women dress now. But yeah, in my opinion, many Muslims have clearly demonstrated they see non Muslim women as sluts and essentially sub human. They also treat their own women like shit too, but in a completely different way. Not sure which one is worse.

His sister does not wear a hijab and is an extreme lefty academic. His mom divorced his dad and left to another state and barely kept in touch with him during his childhood. They were both targets of Mike Rogers ads due to their political activities, and this is where the "do you condemn the islamic brotherhood" comments come from.

Nothing about these women scream conservative muslim woman, at least not in a traditional sense.

Divorce is pretty standard in Islam, with sole parenting rights passing to the father by default.

Surely there are some expectations for the mother to atleast keep in touch with their kids? El-Sayed said he was suprises his mother called him after his primary victory. They seem quite alienated from eachother.

Points accepted but, some Muslims are casual about divorce. I've personally known Muslims who's views on women and society have no place in modern society but have been divorced.

I stand corrected. I think my initial gut feeling of him not being that religious and more motivated by racial/ethnic resentment and pride than religion was/is correct. I was actually surprised to see his wife dress that way based on the interviews I saw with him and his political views. I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't even truly a believer. Very strange though that his wife is dressed so modestly.

He's a politician, and has to present himself to his constituency as a respectable member of the community. That also goes for family members. I don't know how large the Michigan Arab and/or Muslim community is, but I'm sure there are enough members who approve of his wife dressing like a respectable woman and who would disapprove if she showed up with bare head etc. that it's worth keeping on the right side of them for the vote.

That's quite aside from her own opinions on the matter, which we don't know. This article traces her family history and her father is an immigrant from an Indian Muslim community where wearing the hijab is commonplace. So that's the background she grew up with, even if she was born and raised in America.

because it’s actually pretty crazy how a lot of young women dress now.

True. I think it might be worth an effort post sometime. As someone with a very healthy libido, it's actually annoying how slutty women dress now. I'm trying to go about my day, and it's just thrust in my face constantly.

It would be as if everywhere I go there is whiskey and donuts. What's the problem, bro, don't you like whiskey and donuts? Yeah, exactly, that's the problem.

99% of the time, I'd prefer if women dressed modestly.

Hoeflation-driven thot fatigue. The female supply of female sexual objectification and male gaze opportunities exceed the male demand.

It is craziest at the gym. I was warming up on the elliptical because I was sore from soccer and this beautiful young woman probably barely out of high school goes right in front of me and starts running in a tiny outfit. I could see her ass cheeks because her shorts were so short. She was literally right in front of me so if I looked forward it would appear like I was staring. She also works there at the front desk too. I was like come on what am I supposed to do here? Ended up just watching a movie on my phone so I wouldn't look like a creep. I also used to go to a gym that had a ton of famous influencers -- people that have millions of followers and are well known in that world. The women there dressed insane and were always recording themselves. I was like damn I'm going to end up on some woman's stream as a creep just for looking for a split second. It is kind of irritating.

Can they just not do the leggings? I'm trying to balance my bodyweight of heavy things here and now I've got to split my focus with my vision because of the thotspam.
