Midterms Megathread

Cause otherwise midterms discussion will be scattered around a bunch of separate Culture War thread posts. And it's nice to have more off-the-cuff rapid reactions in a dedicated megathread.

The first thing I've noticed so far: if the exit polls are correct, Americans are very pessimistic about AI.

One unexpected winner of yesterday's elections: The State of California. Not only did the wealth tax fail but Prop 42 banned future wealth taxes and also retroactive taxes.

As California staved off the worst, Texas seems destined to start its own decline. Just like everyone said would happen, all the Californians who fled to Texas brought their politics with them. Now they can enjoy high taxes and dismal weather at the same time! I hope you're happy, Joe Rogan.

Personally, I never got the appeal of Texas. California, though. Losing that one to the communists hurts.

I was seriously thinking of moving from Florida to Texas because it is the only state that is building housing and the rent is going down in Austin, Dallas, and Houston.

After last night, however, I am glad I stayed.

Conversely if Texas keeps this up over the next few years it would go very high up my list of states to move to if I ever immigrate to the US (very unlikely, I know). No extra income tax is amazing and like you say, at least they are making an effort to build housing.

Isn’t this saying you want “Texas to do Texas things” but swap their politicians from “Old Money white Texas to California Democrats”? Something tells me it’s unlikely both can be true at the same time.

Why not? Texas things are good, but they can be done just as well by a different cadre of people. Nothing forces a California Democrat to be a NIMBY for example or raise taxes massively.

Nothing forces a California Democrat to be a NIMBY

I guess if you consider the voting public "nothing", sure.
