Never was. Bladed weapons only iirc.

I can’t speak for the Silicon Valley comparison, but you are wrong on the second part. I’d prefer nearly anyone over Dems or neocons, and actual social conservatives of non-Islamic flavor are nowhere near the bottom of these preferences.

At the risk of preempting Ilforte, if he's still around:

В Академии наук

Заседает князь Дундук.

Говорят, не подобает

Дундуку такая честь;

Почему ж он заседает?

Потому что жопа есть.

Roughly, in English:

"In the Academy of Sciences

Sits Prince Dunduk.

People say that it's unfitting -

Not a place he should possess;

Why, then, is the fellow sitting?

It's because he has an ass."

IOW, anecdotal evidence of a broader casting couch.

Maximally offensive version: StarCraft-style base trade. They capture Mecca and/or Medina.

Slightly less contentious version: they plop down in a no-man’s land somewhere between the Donbas and the Dnieper to act as a buffer between two countries that both hate them less than they do each other.

Maximally lazy version: they capture a chunk of Cyprus. It’s close by, and if Turkey can do it, why not them?

Why not Fallout 1/2 and Arcanum as well?

By household. They commonly have households with several working adults.

Add a rough neighborhood, minimal natural resources, a national language virtually unused outside its borders... I was only addressing the overstatement of its human capital.

Do you know a bit of programming and a bit of higher math? Project Euler is not a permanent fix, but it certainly helped me in the depths of depression, and it may well be a step to something good.

Can you please translate your Latin?

This is played straight in Joe Abercrombie’s “A Little Hatred,” where one of the MCs, a lady in her late twenties who had trained with the best fighter of the period for many years, asks said fighter to stop restraining himself.

(Abercrombie had screwed up on this front in the past with Ferro, justified by demonic lineage, and Monza, unjustified even without her injuries).

I wholly agree, and chose to make a weaker statement because I’m not familiar with the Persian diaspora outside the US.

You could get several thousand refugees settled in your neck of the woods.

Given that there are unsupervised cattle in (some subset of?) Indian cities, what measures are people allowed to take if such a bovine behaves aggressively?

https://jobs.nd.edu/ reads “Celebrate diversity with us. Be inclusive.” It’s certainly still a religious institution - just not for the same religion.

Seems more like “I never thought leopards would eat my face, says a face-eating leopard.”

They all equivocate on verbs, whereas what I had in mind usually goes noun->adjective.

Aldnoah.zero is halfway there. Not very good though.

With your preferences, probably Boise or San Antonio. SLC is also plausible and has nicer nature within a couple hours’ drive, but might be a harder cultural fit.

I think that in light of the existence of the judiciary branch, which is pretty much exclusively staffed by such, lawyers holding elected office in the other two branches runs contrary to the notion of checks and balances.

King Rat is fantastic. Btw, flight lieutenant = captain in the UK, which clarifies some of the dynamics in the story.

That’s 1400 in the 1980s, when it was considerably more difficult.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms in English. Sixty pages in, it’s a royal pain to keep track of the names. I wonder if something like Game of Thrones is equally daunting in Mandarin. Would the names be represented by some approximation of meaning or phonetically?

This is great! Thanks for sharing.

You’re smuggling in the assumption that it’s symmetric in the first place. Model as a directed graph imo.

This isn’t just Harvard. It is every American university except the ones that admit anyone with a pulse (and wouldn’t turn down the living dead if someone paid their tuition), and perhaps a smattering of religious schools. Even Caltech debased their admissions not too long ago.
