Culture War Roundup for the week of October 5, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

You are wrong, and you are lying, and I am tired of the tendentious lying that comes with this.

My home county, where my family has lived for a mere five generation, was 85% white children outside of the major metro when I was born. Today that same area (in county, outside of #1 city) is 39% white children. The city itself went from 57% white children when I was born to 49% white children today. The entire county is only 42% white children today, only 2 in 5!

Your cheap lies do not address this, because they can't. This is not just living around different people, this is being wholesale replaced.

The overall numbers of white children is lower, too. It's a hundred thousand fewer white children. It's not just the same numbers of white people, with a few more others. It's replacing whites. The numbers bear this out, and it's the suburbs especially which are being targeting for replacement.

In the decade when I graduated high school, the hispanic population doubled. Plus 90% in 10 years. That is replacement, you phony, you fraud. That is being crowded out by foreigners.

Do not lie to me about this. I am tired of being lied to my face. There is no charitable way to interpret you telling me it's a warm bath when I'm being boiled alive, except you know it's happening too and think it's a good thing.

I'll grant your numbers. Your county has become substantially less white, including in absolute numbers. You dislike that change. Nobody needs to pretend you imagined it.

But explain first, who is "we"?

You seem to think white Americans are a single political bloc with a shared understanding that demographic change is an attack on them. But plenty of white Americans vote Democrat, welcome diversity, and reject your understanding of the country. You can call them dupes or traitors, but that doesn't make your position the consensus they secretly hold.

What do you do about the "native traitor" who feels more affinity with an educated, well spoken, law abiding brown American man who shares his profession, hobbies, neighbourhood, and outlook than with you? Why should your skin colour override everything else those two people have in common? From his perspective, you're demanding ancestral solidarity while sounding like those individuals he was taught to regard as villains. You may dislike that judgment. “But we're both white” is unlikely to change it. Your conception of American belonging hasn't been the consensus for a very long time.

And the demand for dead “traitors” makes the problem considerably worse. You want net zero immigration? We can work with that. But what about the "foreign" citizens of America? There is no way to "sanewash" the social desirability of your calls to ethnically cleanse ~100 million people, which is in no danger of happening anyway.

Or maybe I've misunderstood you, and you are not actually calling for the literal death of all traitors and enemies. What exactly do you want then, and how do you hope to accomplish it? “Stop replacing us” leaves so many questions conveniently unanswered.

And that is in the crux of all your concerns. Members of your putative ingroup can understand the demographic change perfectly well and disagree with you about its significance. If an immigrant espouses secular western values, is productive and pleasant to be around, you're not gonna get the normies to care about (in their view) an aesthetic change.

Of course not. It's the part where people who do not share your values assemble a coalition that wins the vote, and then uses the power of the state to shut you out of political power long-term, deprives you of equal protection under the law, and then uses explicit or implicit state power to dance on your head. The problem is that once the "people exist near you while being of more distant blood-relation than you are used to" is accomplished, the rest of this sequence can happen without any good options available to arrest the process cleanly and with minimal chaos.

Do you understand that while in one sense anything can be voted on, there is another sense in which some things aren't up for a vote? Or do you believe that Democracy is a universal solvent to all the contentions of mankind, and that any human conflict can simply be resolved by voting on it? If by importing multiple millions of foreigners in a relatively short timeframe has the result of putting things up for a vote in the first sense that aren't up for a vote in the second, what do you suppose happens next?

Do you think you could pass some kind of ideological Turing test? Because that's weakmanned as hell.

My family has lived here for fifty years. I see the names of other people in my apartment building when I go to pick up my parcels. There hasn't been any English names for years, at least half a decade. In the local park, English is rarely spoken and most women wear hijabs.

Why did the names vanish? Are you going to claim that nonwhite crime killed all of them?

"Reproduction suppressed economically" is an argument I'm used to hearing from the permanent adolescents who do not dare to have even one child until they are 40, paid mortgage on a house and have college funds.

The elasticity of birth rate with immigration is TTBOMK substantial and negative, although it's hard to study. The most obvious issue is that immigration into cities (which it almost entirely is) increases how overcrowded they are and hence the housing problem. These are not entirely separate problems, and using one as a lever to fix the other is valid.

So? Do you object to the phrase "65 million years ago, mammals replaced reptiles as the dominant land dwellers"? Or "when the last Lord Salisbury died in 1966, the line ended. A banking magnate soon replaced the Salisburys as tenants of Longleat Hall".

Do you argue that this wouldn't have been considered an entirely anodyne phrase right up until it started to be used describing a politically live issue?

I have made an observation. What is the point of debating the cause unless it is to equivocate between "it isn't happening" and "it's good that it is happening"?

My point is that it's impossible by definition to replace someone who's not gone. So "replacement" as in "the great replacement" obscures the actual causes of the original group's diminishment as rhetorically convenient.

Going from 85% white to 40% white during my lifetime is being replaced, and you're not going to make me disbelieve my own lying eyes. Your point is as dull as can be.

No one would be able to use the word "replaced" like it's something evil and vile if they didn't imply that the removal of whites to be later replaced is deliberate and done by the same actors.

So I don't ask you to disbelieve anything, I just want you to speak plainly. If you wish to have a white people (well, "heritage american") guild like they had craftsmen guilds in the past and still have unions in some areas of labor, so that the white people can go on strike whenever they want and can't be replaced with scabs, you can say so.

And more generally, if you really believe there's going to be an annihilation race war and it's going to be initiated by the non-whites I would like to see an actual outline of what you think is going to happen, because so far it looks like vague scaremongering as justification for enacting a white-initiated annihilation race war.

This is why I chose my example carefully. You have a building with 200 people. They used to almost all be English. Now none of them are. We can discuss the mechanisms and consequences but that is straightforwardly "replacement" by any reasonable definition of the word. They were there. Now they are gone.

Secondly, if the reason they are gone is because they are diminishing, then what they/we need is time and space to recover from whatever factor has been depressing populations. Pandas find it difficult to breed under current conditions, but we keep trying because we like pandas and we think that places which used to have pandas should have pandas again. You don't just shrug and import 10 million (much more aggressive!) grizzlies because one bear is basically like another; that would guarantee extinction.

How so? The cause is a deliberate policy on the part of the elites. You're focusing on the mechanics which I consider minutia.

That's certainly part of it. But so is opening the borders to millions of immigrants.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
