Culture War Roundup for the week of October 5, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Polarization increases by assenting to the unwarranted anxiety of the fearful. It’s like an anxiety disorder that expands if you take the fear seriously and become evasive. To end polarization, you want to smash the Overton Window so loudly that it shocks everyone in the vicinity and snaps them into the realization that their chronic catastrophizing is lame and boring. I’ve heard the most “polar opposite” views from friends and family and have never felt this was an obstacle to ties or normalcy or whatever.

I think public executions are a good idea. But in this case, I side with Joe Kent: “death by firing squad is borderline too merciful […] it also gives the terrorists free propaganda”. What I would prefer us to do is use MKUltra propaganda to turn Nidal into an atheist, possibly transgender, and habitual pork and alcohol enjoyer. This is much more aversive to would-be terrorists: the idea that you will lose your eternal reward when you are caught and be turned into an infidel who gets the worst punishment. This is better than making him an international news story, as terrorists are probably motivated by some taste for infamy at the same time that they are motivated by extremism. Also, the theatrics of a firing squad always make the offender look cooler than the shooter. I think about St Sebastian and how cool he looks, and he’s pretty much the firing squad victim of antiquity.

Also, IMO it’s possible this is motivated by the Israel elements of the Trump admin more than anything, given that Nidal is Palestinian, not that this matters for judging whether it is a wise decision.

MKUltra propaganda to turn Nidal into an atheist, possibly transgender, and habitual pork and alcohol enjoyer.

Unfortunately I think that would actually legitimately fit the definition of cruel and unusual punishment.

What I would prefer us to do is use MKUltra propaganda to turn Nidal into an atheist, possibly transgender, and habitual pork and alcohol enjoyer.

I think that might be making a few assumptions regarding the effectiveness of MK-ULTRA....

A few leaked videos of a few reprogrammed terrorists getting consensual trains run on them by other inmates would do more to damper the desire to be an Islamic terrorist than 5000 executions.

In his semi-autobiographical novel Confessions of a Mask (1949), Japanese author Yukio Mishima (三島 由紀夫) describes the saintly image that inspired his sexual awakening: “A remarkably handsome youth was bound naked to the trunk of a tree . . . Were it not for the arrows with their shafts deeply sunk into his left armpit and right side, he would seem more a Roman athlete resting from fatigue”.

Mishima famously stated that "inverts" commonly glommed onto the image of St Sebastian pierced by arrows.

I think it makes sense for a homosexual to latch onto the image of the coolest dude. Perhaps this painting of Sebastian has sufficiently heterosexual undertones, or this one

He still looks... kinda gay?

I wonder if this is one of those things that "everyone knows" that just got passed down orally until the Renaissance when a bunch of painters put it down on canvas?

Uh, renaissance painters were a bit, shall we say ... fruity... themselves, and may have been importing their own preferences into their art.

I haven't read Mishima in a while, but I assumed it was the act of being penetrated by the arrow that lead to the fascination.
