This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Justice Department won’t enforce registration rules on silencers and certain guns after court ruling
This is not a legislative change or even a change after a Supreme Court ruling, so the next administration could reverse it. With that said, the amount of erosion of the National Firearms Act in the last decade is beyond the wildest dreams of the most fervent pro-2nd amendment crowd from 20 years ago. There are states now banning AR15s or trying to ban handguns, but if a person doesn't live in one of those, they can buy a short-barreled rifle and suppressor with no background check or tax stamp.
I have to say that it was a disappointment when I found out that movie silencers are all fake and that guns are actually still really loud with them attached.
At least they turn the super-sonic ear rape wave into a slightly less ear-fucking clap. For this reason operating on the theory that any civilian deployment of a handgun while not gangbanging with your homies is in fact in self defense, they should be not only allowed but mandatory. You should not be expected to loose your hearing after, when you have to defend yourself from a home invasion.
If this stuff sticks maybe we see integrated suppressors becoming more of a thing? At the moment the worst part of them is the big can hanging off the end of your barrel; something like the DeLisle for rifles or the equivalent handgun would be super-cool!
I'm currently trying to decide what I want to buy and/or build. A CMMG banshee 9mm AR with FRT and suppressor is up there on the list, but I'm also really tempted to buy a cheap 5.56 bolt action used, and get the barrel swapped to 9mm with an integrated suppressor. more engineering would be needed to make it magazine-fed, but it seems like it'd make a pretty nice de lisle-alike. I also want to try building my own takedown .22, either based on the AR-7 or on the marlin or ruger takedown guns.
looking at the options, though, it's hard to see why it's worth going to the manual actions or single-shots when semi-autos are so cheap. I have a fascination with cheap guns, and one of the things I'm curious about is if you could use a .22 or 9mm adapter, or even just an AR barrel, to rework one of those cheap $50 turkish single-shot 12-gauges into an integrally-suppressed single shot, using the shotgun barrel as the outer wall of the suppressor. Or maybe see what you could do with a high-point 9mm carbine; those guns are actually cheap cheap. if you're paying $3-400 for even a used manual-action rifle and then reworking it to a pistol caliber, it's only a couple hundred more for a high-capacity AR, and actually less for the cheaper options.
If you want something actually transformative, build a vz. 61 with a lower that you can put an FRT into, then suppress it. If you must go Banshee, get the fixed ejector upgrade if you can (ejection is a weak point of this design), or go with the MEAN Arms roller-delayed system (it isn't an issue there). Or buy a parts kit and print an MP5.
Pistol caliber semi-autos have always been cheaper simply because they require no locking system to function safely. That's why manual-action guns in these calibers are so rare (with the exception of magnum-length revolver calibers).
(Same reason why there are barely any straight-pull bolt-action rifles- you're >95% of the way to a semi-auto. The Heym SR-30, simplest of the straight-pulls, is mechanically/operationally identical to an HK SL-7 without an action spring and appropriate "locking" piece.)
If you can get the "donor" gun in question to take a normal magazine, just use Endomags (or Exomags if you want a 10-rounder for something closer to flush-fitting). Bolt guns with plunger ejectors might cause you some grief, but these magazines are available with ejectors mounted on them should you require that (though it's a compromise as they can get damaged, like they can on the 10/22, which also does this).
Extar's plastic 9mm is arguably a better value simply by virtue of needing fewer magazines (and you can put an FRT in that too).
